Nicholson and Muir were based out of New York (Howdy Doody and the first Pay Cards were there). I don't know if they were in the day-to-day production of Definition, but if they were, the trip to Ontario was probably a lot easier from Westchester County than it would have been from LA.
Don't know why Spin-Off would have been Hollywood-based except to make it convenient for Jim Lange. Not likely to have been at CBS's insistence, given Musical Chairs came from good ol' NYC.

You are probably right about the LA move having to do with Jim Lange, though I'm surprised that Mr Lange would have had that much say, in such a decision.
I attended many Musical Chairs tapings at the Ed Sullivan Theater. It was a fun, and entertaining TV show taping, and Adam Wade was extremely personable.
