If this is any help, it was posted back when Bergeron's Squares first debuted that the premiere episode was actually No. 24, taped 8/22/98.[/quote]
Right, the first couple weeks aired out of turn because of Florence Griffith Joyner dying, didn't they?

Not quite.  Per Wikipedia, HS '98 debuted September 14, 2008; Flo Jo died a week later.  If I remember correctly, they put the most star-packed week with the fewest goofups up front.

Depends on the market.  In my area, the Flo Jo week aired as scheduled from 9/21-25/98, but I remember talking to a couple of people I was trading with at the time and they said their market aired a repeat of the debut on that Monday, followed by Flo Jo the rest of the week.  I think it was that weekend when she died and maybe some stations weren't sure what they were supposed to do(?)

That might be. It sticks in my head because that second week (which I believe was to be the FloJo week) was the week I moved into my first apartment up here in Seattle.

Second week (starting the 21st) was FloJo...I think she died that Monday (Wiki confirms). I have original tapes from that week with Whoopi mentioning the week of episodes being taped before FloJo's death. However, I don't think the message started until Tuesday the 22nd...

It definitely helps. Thanks. :)

So unless GSN is saving premiere week for some special occasion, they're not gonna air it...darn.

Was the out-of-order airing the cause for those odd intros with Tom and Whoopi at the beginning of the episodes GSN has rerun recently? I didn't really get into the show until H2 started, so I figure the only way I'll know is to ask.

Yes. I believe somebody already mentioned it, but the shows taped first aired in December. Since they had lower dollar figures, and a slightly different format, they put that at the beginning to prep the viewer.

Seems like they aired a few wks out of order that season...the wk w/that $14.5K win ($12K in the maingame, plus $2.5K in "consolation cash" for missing the bonus question) was actually the first taped wk w/the revised bonus round. Also, the Mon. show of that wk featured a completely different reveal: the question was asked first, then chosen celeb Sharon Lawrence revealed what was in the envelope...they switched this immediately b/c her reveal was too anticlimactic.

And to top it off, sometime in Jan. 99 - a good 3 mos after the bonus change - they ran a new wk w/the original endgame format!

Also, didn't a lot of markets get the Monday episode preempted originally because the Bill Clinton testimony was released? She died the same day, so probably a combination of the two. Most markets didn't run an episode to begin with, while the others probably didn't know what to do because of her death.

Yep, they used that intro when they aired the first 2 taped weeks, which had a few minor differences from later shows, besides the original payoffs and bonus round:

- The Xs and Os that framed the players' nameplates were pink instead of blue
- A different sound effect was used when money was added to a player's total
- A Secret Square was played in game 3 regardless of whether or not the one in game 2 was won

Today's GSN episode had a main game contestant win $12,000.
