Hosting record: most revivals?
« on: June 11, 2009, 03:35:48 PM »
I just got to wondering: Bill Cullen hosted more game shows than anyone else, but who hosted the most *revivals*? My first guess would be Alex Trebek, with Jeopardy, Classic Concentration, To Tell The Truth, New Battlestars, and the second version of High Rollers (and maybe something else I've forgotten). But who else has done a lot of them, and has anyone done more than five?

(hey, it beats nitpicking TPIR to death again, no matter how large some of those nits may be)

If I'm counting right, Tom Kennedy hosted remakes or revivals of Doctor IQ, Name That Tune, Password, The Price is Right and his own You Don't Say.  Break the Bank was not a revival, just a resurrection of the name.  He was also not the original host of It's Your Bet, but that doesn't count as a revival.

Depending on how literally you define "revival" though, Mr. Cullen may have the record himself.  He was not the original host for a lot of shows in the fifties that would go in and out of production, switch networks and otherwise confound TV historians.  And does his version of Pyramid count, since the original wasn't really out of production at the time?

Eubanks did Dream House and CS plus at least three revivals of TNG.  Rayburn did three:  MG '7x, MG/HS, and Break the Bank (but, again, not strictly a revival).  Monty Hall hosted three revivals of LMAD and one of Split Second.

Seems to me like this might go not only to the same host, but the same show...Mike Stokey's Pantomime Quiz,
with...no exaggeration....at least twelve different runs.

Does it count, though, if it's a scheduled temporary series? I mean, by that argument, Jeff Probst and Survivor (if you consider it a game show, which I don't, but go with me here) beats it easily.

Woolery could be considered for at least three as well...

-Scrabble 93
-Dating Game 97
-Lingo

I keep thinking I'm missing something...it's technically not a game show, but was there ever a break from Love Connection in the late-80s or early-90s? If so, it could be 4 or 3.5, depending on how you look at it.

Jim Lange also has three: Dating Game in the 70s, the one-week Newlywed Game and Name That Tune, both 1984.

Are we considering the 1985 run of syndicated TPIR to be a revival of the previous syndie run, or a spinoff of daytime TPIR?

And All-New Beat the Clock.

Let's see:  Wink did Can You Top This?, the second run of Tic Tac Dough, Las Vegas Gambit, and the third run of High Rollers.  Geoff Edwards did The New Treasure Hunt, Jackpot '89, and Chain Reaction.  Allen Ludden did two Password revivals, Win With the Stars (a revival of Wink's What's That Song?) and The Liar's Club.

Regis Philbin would be good for three: Super Millionaire, 2009 primetime Millionaire and Million Dollar Password.

Tying him with Bob Barker.

So now we're down to naming people with two revivals under their belt, when the OP asked for five.  Who wants to be the first person to mention the ones who just have one?

If we count Game Show Marathon, Rikki hosted SEVEN revivals, but they were all one-shot deals, so I know some people wouldn't count those as revivals, per se.
