Question for the Brit posters: How exactly is "X Factor" different from "(Country) Idol"?

Then let's hope a network doesn't decide to resurrect Double Dare and add a million dollar tournament to the obsticle course, or else we are all in big trouble.

I have seen bits and pieces on the interwebs, but it seems X-Factor is like America's/Britain's Got Talent, but without the Gong Show meets (Insert territory here) Idol meets Showtime At the Apollo atmosphere.  Please correct me if I appear to be incorrect.

Similar at the start - auditions, boot camp etc. Each act is effectively "mentored" by one of the judges with each judge taking a category. The acts are split into three or four categories (currently 16-24 yr old girls, 16-24 yr old boys, over 25s and groups). The bottom two each week sing off and the judges decide between them who goes. Adding a fourth judge for this made this a bit more difficult, so if the judges votes tie then it goes back to the viewer vote. Judges rarely vote to send their own act home, obviously, unless both the bottom two are mentored by one judge. DRAMA.

Actually, the biggest difference is Simon Cowell owns the X Factor format so he makes more money.

It's not really been all that successful in places Simon Cowell isn't a judge, perhaps interestingly.

And actually this year in response to the enormous success of Britain's Got Talent, auditions were held in packed theatres and arenas in a move that nobody watching really liked but SImon Cowell insists is a good idea.

Have you watched it, or are you just going on what other people have said about it?

Ripped from my comment @ Buzzerblog regarding the Cube, here's how I'd like to see the Cube run:

1. Money Tree: $2k, $10k, $25k, $50k, $100k, $250k, $500k; keeps the money from going too high too fast and leaves open the chance of a special final high difficulty challenge for $1m.

2. Host: This may be the oddball pick, but I'm going with John DeLancie; better known as Star Trek's Q. Given the atmosphere The Cube creates, there is a, pardon the pun, omnipotence about it, and who better to host it than one who has played an omnipotent being? That and I believe John's Q-like anecdotes will keep the presence of the game mysterious, exciting, shrewd when necessary, and still very entertaining.

3. For the Voice: My initial reaction was Pat Kiernan (the questioner from Grand Slam, et al); but something tells me his voice may have to be distorted to be more ominous. Perhaps another person will take the spot, but as of now, that's who I'd like to see be the Voice.

4. The Body: Initial reaction: Either Kari Byron from Mythbusters or Morgan Webb from G4. However, if a buxom model must be used, at least get one that is into these sorts of games. No name comes to mind as of now, but I'm sure one will pop out.

God help me, assuming he has any kind of hosting chops at all, I like this.

You get Kari or Morgan in that gig and I assure you something will INDEED pop out. :)

Whatever happened to Scottie from Mythbusters?  She was hot-hot-HOT! (So is Kari, but they're different kinds of hot.)

And speaking of the build team, anyone else notice Grant's teeth mysteriously straightening during his tenure?

As much as I like this idea, I sense you're not getting Kari or Morgan on that show with their faces masked.

Scottie doesn't do much for me.  On the other hand, the things Kari could do to me...>:-)

I think he'd be a good choice for the voice of The Cube as well. It would be more snarky and superior than ominous, but it would work.

Going into the realm of "people already employed by Fox", Mark Thompson would do pretty well as the voice of the cube, especially if he does the same flat, very deep tone that he used on the voice overs for Greed.

I mostly hope that they get the right host - you do need someone who seems to be the cube's intellectual equal. One of the things I never thought about until now but really appreciate about Philip Schofield is that he doesn't treat the statistics about the game as just numbers to be read off before getting to the "Will (s)he risk it or not?" suspense.

Going off the board, Burton Richardson in his Russian Roulette mode.

I don't know that I can trust most of the current hosts anymore.  Plus anyone can do demostrations so that is no problem.  But this needs to be syndicated to make it better.  The only two amount that should change are to bottom to $2,000 and $5,000.
