No, it has absolutely nothing to do with the material. Old shows get low ratings. We were lucky that GSN positioned itself as a nostalgia network for as long as it did, but those days appear to be over.

And to take this one step farther, would you consider this the start of a new 'dark period'? Which in retrospect doesn't look so bad now. Basically the schedule is Feud, Millionaire, DoND, Poker shows and rerun abuse of their GSN product. Aside from these you have little else.

Yep, though I would still call the '97 DP the, um, DP, because that was the point when you knew the network would never be the same. Sure the G-T shows came back, but the multiple reruns carried over, which were helpful for taping but not so much for the variety of pre-Oct '97. And then came cut fee plugs, split screens, Fleming-era originals, and so forth and so on with every "incarnation" of the network. I think most of us would call it near-perfect pre-10/97, on the other hand.
And FYI, I think the OP is thinking of the reason why they dropped Marshall HS and kept Bergeron.
EDIT: And yet, now mirrors the post-10/97 situation, now that I think of it. As they have only two G-T shows on the schedule and the rest is other stuff. (Oddly, one of said two shows could also be seen in "DP" number one, though they can show multiple versions now) But yeah, "DP" #1 had the advantage cause the other stuff was stuff hardcores wanted to see, with notable exceptions.
