I know it's The Way It Is, but why are breakouts for Price into half-hours, when every other daytime show (save B&B) is counted as an hour.  On soaps, the cliff-hanger occurs in the second half-hour, so wouldn't it be advantageous to break them into two half-hours as well?

If I'm not mistaken, CBS has submitted the show as 2 half hours ever since the show was expanded back in '75. I believe it's for advertising purposes.

Which is pretty silly, since they've done so much backpedalling that it feels more like the Barker era this year than it did last year.

In television production the Golden Rule is; a good formula is a good formula, period.  Like all the TPIR hosts before him, Drew Carey is finding his own approach to TPIR based on the solid foundation that Mark Goodson created.  Back when Mr. Goodson made the bold move to hire a new, inovative producer (Wolpert) and take TPIR to the first ever hour-long-game-show there were plenty of naysayers screaming "NO, IT WILL NEVER WORK.  DON'T CHANGE A THING!".  Thank goodness Mr. Goodson didn't listen then, just as the current producers aren't listening to the naysayers now.  And because of Mr. Goodson's genius, and a rock solid formula, plus being CBS's Golden Hour, TPIR will always find it's balance, and remain a staple in tv programming.

To be blunt I very much doubt Mark would have hired Drew. Goodson would most certainly have required an audition and, having seen other emcees audition and lose, I likewise doubt Drew would have won the audition.

Thing is, if Mr. Goodson was around for the change in order, Drew wouldn't have been the host, since he turned the hosting offer down (TWICE?).

........ which leads me to another question.  How much say did/does the network have in who hosts which game? I've heard of instances where the network strongly pushes a certain host, such as Barker/TPIR, Bill Cullen/Hot Potato and Jim Peck/The Big Showdown, Hot Seat, and Second Chance all come to mind.

From what I understand, Jim Peck was under contract for a time with ABC, which also led to him subbing for David Hartman on Good Morning America and hosting a prime-time fall preview special for the network.  He also had a small part on "Battlestar Galactica," but I think that came after the contract expired.   There was a blurb in Variety in fall 76 that announced that Tom Kennedy had a contract with NBC for daytime game show hosting between 76 and 78. "50 Grand Slam," daytime "Name That Tune" and "To Say the Least" were the shows from that time frame.

I would venture to guess networks have some sayso, as they could choose to not pick up the show otherwise. In the case of Goodson, CBS must have had some influence on choosing Monty Hall for BTC.  I don't think Mr. Goodson would select someone who happened to run a competing game show company as a host by himself.
