The first comment in that thread mentions a bug that let a guy get into the Mob faster.
I'm curious to know if anyone here knows what that bug was, or if this is just another Kotaku user talking out of his ass.
(And you have my word that I won't report it, if you do know. I wouldn't have the first idea where to do so, anyhow.)
Well, not really a "bug" to exploit, but rather a hole in their Mob/One selection method.
To set up the mob/one, they'd rank everyone by one or more of three stats: participation, accuracy, and speed. They'd apply different weights to each of the factors, then take the top ranked players (minus those already chosen during the session) as the Mob/One.
The problem lies in the "speed" ranking. The speed ranking supposedly didn't care whether you got answers right or not. So, a number of people completely disregarded the questions, and hammered on the first answer button to maximize their computer ranking in the "speed" category. The weighting of the three stats changed with every new One/Mob selection, so it was then just a matter of waiting for master control to draw up a game prioritizing speed over the other factors.
I even read a few anecdotes of people taking this to the extreme. They'd jump into the last Extended Play before the Live show proper, hammer on the first answer for maybe three or four questions, then successfully end up with a seat in the Mob sometime during the show.
You can read finer details of the selection process
here, at least until they update for the new season.
