Per Kotaku, the new season of 1 vs, 100 Live begins November 19.  It starts with an Extended Play session beginning at 8:00 pm ET.

There's going to be some changes this season as well (new Set for Extended Play - for example).

Check them out at the blog:

The first comment in that thread mentions a bug that let a guy get into the Mob faster.

I'm curious to know if anyone here knows what that bug was, or if this is just another Kotaku user talking out of his ass.

(And you have my word that I won't report it, if you do know. I wouldn't have the first idea where to do so, anyhow.)

Well, not really a "bug" to exploit, but rather a hole in their Mob/One selection method.

To set up the mob/one, they'd rank everyone by one or more of three stats: participation, accuracy, and speed.  They'd apply different weights to each of the factors, then take the top ranked players (minus those already chosen during the session) as the Mob/One.

The problem lies in the "speed" ranking.  The speed ranking supposedly didn't care whether you got answers right or not.  So, a number of people completely disregarded the questions, and hammered on the first answer button to maximize their computer ranking in the "speed" category.  The weighting of the three stats changed with every new One/Mob selection, so it was then just a matter of waiting for master control to draw up a game prioritizing speed over the other factors.

I even read a few anecdotes of people taking this to the extreme.  They'd jump into the last Extended Play before the Live show proper, hammer on the first answer for maybe three or four questions, then successfully end up with a seat in the Mob sometime during the show.

You can read finer details of the selection process here, at least until they update for the new season.

The 1 vs 100 Live blog posted an update today, explaining the selection process for being The One or in The Mob for the new season.  It'll be based on score only.

There are three different criteria for selection of Mob or One:  your score for the entire season, score for that week's games, or your score in the last game on the Live show.  The criteria they'll use will rotate from game to game.  The top scorer based on the selected criteria becomes The One, with the next 100 high scores making up the Mob.

That's a bit of a shame, because it still means you either have to play a buttload either that week or that season to have a chance, since the one-off "last game" thing means those robots with perfect scores and instant answers are the only ones with any chance to get on, and an only-occasional player now has NO shot at all.

Seconded. I don't play a whole lot, but I usually play pretty well each session, and I'd like to have some sort of chance of making it in. I'd rather them do it based on average, so even someone who only plays 2 or 3 times a week has a fighting chance.

This was on in the UK this evening, the new software is massively, MASSIVELY buggy, it crashed my XBox no less than four times in an hour (details on Bother's Bar). Presumably it will be the same software your side of the pond.

I played the "extended play" session last night and had no problem other than seeing a couple of questions repeated during the night.

I plan on being on during the "LIVE" show @ 10pm EST...Although I have read thru Facebook that the game is having a few issues...We'll see what happens later.

I was able to get into the game tonight with no worries.

Second game in, I made it into the Mob.  And I promptly missed the first question of the game.  Ugh.

So far so good...No problems getting in or playing.  It's going so good that I'm in the mob as we speak....Lets hope I can get something out of it.

Update:  As soon as I posted this, "The One" bombed out.  I was one of 40 that got 80 Microsoft Points and this week's featured Xbox Live Arcade game, "Uno Rush".

On the down side, not enough points to pick up Beatles: Rock Band DLC, but I did get a game I had thought about buying and didn't.

Uno Rush is really excellent. Beats the hell out of the poor bastards who won "A Kingdom For Keflings." :)

I would agree with that.  My other half downloaded the demo, and after I let out a incredulous WTF after seeing it,  I very quickly demanded that vaporware be deleted from my hard drive post-haste.

Arrrgh...just missed winning Uno Rush by less than 100 points in the last game of the night.

Hopefully I have better luck on Tuesday.  Congrats on your win, Jumpondees.
