The A.C.S.T.'s handbook advices the use of microphones only for tournaments, and even that depends on if there's at least 20 spectators attending in the gallery. Not withstanding that the compromise that led to that decision wasn't without a lot of infighting from players, arguing that if you have to use a microphone, you're doing it wrong.
Hell, there was a month-long edit war on Wikipedia over whether or not a recent divisional championship needed an asterisk for that very reason. It doesn't make that much of a difference in a game's outcome, but for some of the games more-serious devotees (I call them dorks), it's the difference between a clay or lawn court in tennis.
ObGS: On Youtube, there was a Japanese game show where four comedians answered trivia questions by shouting their answer into a microphone. The more confidence in their answer, the louder they yelled, and the more they scored if they were right. Think of a studio booking the Who What or Where Game and The O'Reilly Factor at the same time, and just saying "Screw it, they'll both film at the same time!"
Damned if I could remember the name, though.
FAKE EDIT: Or what Mello said.
