Giving more letters meant taking away some time.[/quote]
I'm pretty sure this is right...I seem to remember the rule change happening while GSN was running the '88-'89 season over and over and over.

Yes, exactly right, the changes were simultaneous, happening on the same day, and the 10 second rule was changed to as result of the players having 4 more letters to work with.
As for it being long enough... with how many other issues a number of us agree the show has right now, that the bonus (IMHO) has reached a good win/loss ratio, there's the idea of bringing up something else to tinker with which is very recognizable/well-known about the show and hasn't had issue in 21 years? Then again, with the FS debacle and all, maybe I shouldn't open up a can of worms, nevertheless... Uhm, yeah, okay, especially with how rushed the show feels some days (sure, the ads are the real cause, and this won't do anything to help either side), what do you think this would do? Emphasis on what Rollercoaster said as well...
/Of all the gripes I have with the show right now, the bonus round (when they actually have SOMETHING besides cash up for grabs) is not one of them. Leave well enough alone. Let's take a look at the gimmickry-ridden/trite-evolved main portion if you wanna suggest something needs to be improved.
