Nah, 10 seconds is plenty. If ya don't know it, no amount of extra time is going to help.

Well (says the host of Words Have Meanings), strictly speaking, that's not true.  There are probably plenty of puzzles that could have been solved if the contestant had thirty seconds, or a minute, or ten minutes.  It's not the same as an obscure trivia fact that you either know or don't know.  The puzzles are English words, and there are only 26 letters, ten of which are already in play.  Theoretically, any puzzle they use could be solved eventually given some indefinite amount of extra time.

Having said that, ten seconds is plenty.

Ten seconds for a bonus round puzzle seems like ample time to me. Unfortunately, the puzzles have become so off-the-wall in recent years that all the time in the world (yes, I know Words Have Meanings) still wouldn't help. I can't think of a specific example, but there was one in the last week that left me and my co-workers shaking our heads because it was so ridiculous.

Side note: when did the show reduce the clock from :15 to :10?

Giving more letters meant taking away some time.

In late 1988.

Thanks guys. Looks like Chad was on the right track; they added the 3 consonants/1 vowel rule in October of '88 or so.

Not only that, if a player carries a Wild Card into the bonus round, s/he's alloted an extra constanant for a total of 11 letters in play(which began in 2007 I think).  I think 10 seconds is certainly enough time to figure it out using the letters not used to come up with the solution.  Of course some players get it right away & others don't.  It's simply a matter of picking the right letters & even that may not be enough.

Besides, you really get 17 or 18 seconds- Once the contestant's letters are revealed, Pat still has to say his "Well, you didn't get much help/ You're a good puzzle solver/ You've got 10 seconds" spiel. If a contestant ignores Pat and focuses on the puzzle, then they really get more time.

I'm pretty sure this is right...I seem to remember the rule change happening while GSN was running the '88-'89 season over and over and over.

Yes, exactly right, the changes were simultaneous, happening on the same day, and the 10 second rule was changed to as result of the players having 4 more letters to work with.

As for it being long enough... with how many other issues a number of us agree the show has right now, that the bonus (IMHO) has reached a good win/loss ratio, there's the idea of bringing up something else to tinker with which is very recognizable/well-known about the show and hasn't had issue in 21 years? Then again, with the FS debacle and all, maybe I shouldn't open up a can of worms, nevertheless... Uhm, yeah, okay, especially with how rushed the show feels some days (sure, the ads are the real cause, and this won't do anything to help either side), what do you think this would do? Emphasis on what Rollercoaster said as well...

/Of all the gripes I have with the show right now, the bonus round (when they actually have SOMETHING besides cash up for grabs) is not one of them. Leave well enough alone. Let's take a look at the gimmickry-ridden/trite-evolved main portion if you wanna suggest something needs to be improved.

Which is exactly what happened to me when I was on. I pretty much focused on the puzzle, and by the time Pat said "Good Luck" the solution was already in my head just waiting to come out.

Also, it helps when you're thinking of possible words even when RSTLNE are coming up. So actually... in theory, you have about 30 seconds to decipher it.

[/quote]Plus with what you said Ethan, that would not even be fair to everyone at all.  Some won't even get it within 30 seconds anyway.  Abba is right, 10 is plenty when you have the choice of eight consonants and two vowels.

The part that amuses me so much here is that the guy he's saying "is right" is also the one guy in this thread who seems to be advocating the precise opposite viewpoint from the one he's being declared right about. :)

While your assumption is probably right, to be 100% fair, abba never gave his opinion at all. He just asked if anyone things (sic) that the time should be more than 10 seconds. I could start a thread saying "Anyone think that Richard Karn was the best FF host?", but that wouldn't mean that I believed so.
