OK, I'm a display geek. I suspect that's what got me into game shows way back when.
When redesigning the set for Bay Area Quiz Kids we decided that a simple score display was a bit too dull. There needed to be some action when the score changed. We settled on simulating flap displays.
To create the right animations we took apart a real Signaltron display (the same make and model as the ones used on all those Bob Stewart shows from the '70s, including Pyramid). I've put those pictures on my latest blog posting,
"Confessions of a Middle Aged Quiz Kid." It also includes a link to a short video showing the display going from blank to "10." Yes, the zero followed the "9."
Also I added a link to two sites that show some other vintage displays. The
ST-15 is my Signaltron's "little brother." You might remember it as the score display on the Who, What, or Where Game.
The
IEE One Plane Readout pre-dated the Signaltrons and was the display on the original Art Fleming Jeopardy! and New York Password. A German site
has pictures of a disassembled IEE readout. Don't bother trying to read the German, just look at the pretty pictures.
