$10,000 Pyramid on GSN
« on: March 11, 2010, 01:24:01 AM »
Does anyone know how many episodes of the $10,000 Pyramid have aired on GSN?

If so, how many from the week featuring:

Barbara Feldon & John Schuck?
Edward Asner & Sandy Duncan?
Anita Gillette, David Speilberg, McLean Stevenson, Loretta Switt? (I'm pretty sure all 5 episodes from that week aired).

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Of the weeks you mentioned, the only episode that GSN didn't air out of those 15 is the Tuesday episode of the Duncan/Asner week. The other 14 episodes all played at least once on GSN.

As a bit of added information, a brief extract of a Winner's Circle round being played from that particular Tuesday Duncan/Asner episode, never seen on GSN, was inserted in that three-minute 1974 promotional sales film for the Bill Cullen-hosted $25,000 Pyramid.  GSN has not aired a $10,000 Pyramid episode in their programming schedule since November 2002.

I should add that GSN only ever showed those 14 episodes of $10,000 -- they never aired any other episodes from the first three years, or any $20,000 episodes from 1976-77 and late 1979-80.

Although I really doubt that the CBS run is gone given that The Joker's Wild and Spin-Off are intact.

Okay...so in the above mentioned pitchfilm there is one contestant who wins on "Things That Crack".  The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder aired *that* win reaction during a segment in which Tom was announcing taking a long weekend or something to that affect.  He said, "Is this the part where the guy goes nuts on the quiz show?"  <cue win reaction>

That aired around 96(?) or so and the part they showed was from a much cleaner copy than what we get on Youtube.  Is there a way to discern when that win occured? -and-  Does anyone have a date when the pitchfilm was created?  Because my thinking and speculation (which can only get me into trouble) is that seeing as Snyder taped at CBS TV City would it stand to reason that someone in the production crew found old episodes of 10K taped at TV City?  Or perhaps it was lifted directly from the  pitchfilm laying around and decided to plug it in to the show?  Or, if it is believed that the original CBS run is completly intact then someone at CBS has the however many weeks they recorded in NY?

/I didn't know Spin-Off was intact.
//Anybody know who owns that?

Thanks gang!

My understanding as to why those 14 episodes exist is because they were shot at Television City.  Pyramid moved to Hollywood for three weeks in Nov 1973.  None of the New York episodes from before or after that are known to exist in studio master form.  There is one that was recorded off a very early home VCR from June 1973 which has been circulating for years - the video's not the best though.

As for $20,000 Pyramid, Bob Stewart started saving shows in mid-1978, but there are a handful from before that which are in the trade curcuit.  One in partucilar, from 1976, is a very clean studio master copy.

As for when the pitchfilm was done, all I can offer is it was likely done in accordance with trying to sell the show for Prime Access syndication.  That usually happened at the NAPTE convention sometime in the spring.

Actually the reason why Snyder aired that clip often was because it was one of his own production people on Late Late who won the big money there.

This is a full accounting of known extant $20K episodes prior to when the GSN holdings begin at June 12, 1978.

March 1, 1976 (Anne Meara-Nipsey Russell) (Recorded by contestant Sue Dolleris, who also recorded an appearance on "Shoot For The Stars")
July 6, 1976 (Loretta Swit-Clifton Davis) (Studio Master)
August 10, 1976 (JoAnne Worley-Tony Randall) (Studio Master)
September 12-16, 1977 (William Shatner-Leonard Nimoy) (Full week; fair to poor quality)
February 24, 1978 (Anne Meara-Nipsey Russell) (Recorded by contestant Marc Archembault)
February 27, 1978 (Joyce Bulifant-Ron Glass) (Recorded by contestant Marc Archembault)
April 28. 1978 (Adrienne Barbeau-Soupy Sales) (Studio Master)

I'm guessing this is the win. At the time, he worked on "Late Night With David Letterman". SonicWhammy's comment seems to confirm Snyder showing the clip as well (Snyder's show was also produced by Letterman's production company).

* The pitchfilm was made in 1974 (presumably after the first week taped at ABC Studio-15, as that is the last clip in the set; the clips also appear to be in chronological order)
* The clip linked to above is from the week of May 9-13, 1977.
* The linked clip has a winning subject of "Things That Wander" (:47), not "Things That Crack" (seen in the pitchfilm at 1:49).

Both daytime and nighttime continued to use a few $10,000 wins in 1976-78 clip montages, and the first two seasons of $25,000 sometimes had a $10,000 win in its clip montage.
