How long does it take from the time the contestant says the persons name to the time they actually get them on the line?

Can you phone a friend outside the USA?
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

You can phone only within the USA IIRC.

It takes a minute or two.  They edit out the time when you see it on the show.

It really doesn't take long. After the contestant says the name, Meredith says that they'll get that person on the line, and you hear ringing in the studio within about five seconds. The PaF is instructed to pick up after the third ring (the first two are edited). All in all, the process only takes about 20 seconds.

Contestants are specifically told that no "international calls" may be made, so you might be able to slip a Canadian by them, but that's about it.

SOmeone could decide to use an "adult chat" service originating out of Santo Domingo as a Phone-a-Friend.

 "Hello! This is Regis!"

"Mmm, baby, I'm so hot for you..."

"Um, right. We have your friend Kevin here, and he needs your help!"

"Ooooh, give it to me, baby...."

"O-kay. Kevin, you have 30 seconds. I have a feeling you've gotten it done in much, much less. Good luck..."

Like there aren't thousands of "adult chat" services in the US.

For example, La..

Nevermind.

Two guesses:

1)  The AT&T promotional contract stated that AT&T would not pay for international calls.

2)  Now that Disney's paying for the Phone-a-Friends, *they* don't want to pay for international calls.

It probably also would have to do with international laws concerning contests.  They don't want to have to deal with them.

The UK version allows international PAF's.
