Pay Cards!

Yes, I've written a board-game review. No, it (hopefully) doesn't suck.

http://wariobarker.angelfire.com/paycardsboardgame.html (the format is GSHGHP-esque)

"In-A-Nutshell" Summary:
Accurate to some of the 1960s rules, but not all of them (Strategy and Wild Card are not accounted for). Very easy to adapt for playing Super Pay Cards!, provided you have some "normal" playing cards for the bonus round. Game was received in top-notch condition, and very beautiful to look at overall. Highly-recommended.

If you have any questions about this game, please ask.

I had the board game as a child. As long as you knew what cards were in each of the different colored decks, you were on your way. (It's the home game equivalent of card counting.)

You spent all that time telling us what was in the game, but from what I saw, maybe a paragraph-ish on what you think of it. For me, that's way more important than knowing how much play money is included.
If you didn’t create it, it isn’t your content.

I don't think it's awful. I also don't think it's a "review"; it's an entry in a catalog or Wiki-type thing, which is really more what Matt does with the GSHGHP.

I thought Matt did reviews in the GSHGHP -- talks about what games are good, which are bad...it's my first time doing such a thing, and I'm only planning to write up articles on games that Matt doesn't go in-depth on.

Point taken. I've expanded the "Comments" section to about three paragraphs.

To note, I've seen very little of the 1960s series...and the "exact amount of play money" thing is just a detail I threw in for the purposes of completion.

Doowhutchalike, man. You asked for opinions and I gave mine.

I've seen an episode of Super Pay Cards, and Art James promoted a home game version of it!

Some collectors, including myself, have been curious to find out if the home game version of Super Pay Cards was ever released, even if only in Canada, where the show was produced.

As with most of my writing, while there's certainly a personal element to it, most of it is not opinion-driven.  I certainly don't consider my GSHGHP entries "reviews" in the same manner one reviews the quality of a play or a book.  If a game has cheap materials, or the worst quiz book ever, or is essentially pointless, I'll make a note of that, and that's certainly an opinion*, but I'm not about to get into the nuances of whether anybody might or might not find the game enjoyable to play.

Meanwhile, while I'm flattered by the obvious homage to my style, I think, Dan, that you could accomplish the same thing without such a precise recreation of my pages.  Feel free to select your own font, for example.  And honestly, your "comments" section, with your own personal observations, is the most interesting part of the page.  Moving forward, I suggest you give that part more prominence in future reviews so what you're doing looks less like a copy of mine.

*Except the one about the quiz book.  That's just fact.

Did you get BigJon thread flashbacks too?

Personally, I think the font (Verdana, for those keeping score at home) works, but that's just me. I won't be stealing any images from the GSHGHP (or making knockoff versions of them) either, because I don't play like that.

And honestly, your "comments" section, with your own personal observations, is the most interesting part of the page. Moving forward, I suggest you give that part more prominence in future reviews so what you're doing looks less like a copy of mine.
Duly noted -- the review is now first, foremost, and detailed.

In my experience of having style/ideas cribbed, it's the ones doing the imitating that often say that.

Just off the top of my head, putting the almanac-type info in a sidebar (the game's contents, etc.), and leaving the body open to your review would already make it worlds different from Matt's page. I would also put thumbnails within my text, clicking on them to expand.

Matt didn't invent using Verdana or that layout, but "flattering" would be far from my vocabulary when describing your aping of it. The actual content was okay, and covered a board game I was curious about.

Suggestion noted, but I can't make any promises -- I am human, after all. ;)[/quote]If I thought that you would take any of my suggestions to heart, I would be glad to put them down and send them off. But you keep on keeping on, refusing to budge even a little bit with that imitation and human business. We're telling you how to get along, and you refuse to get the hint.

You don't become a good writer by copying another person's style. I'm not going to sell a science-fiction story because I can ape Philip K. Dick's style completely, but because I have my own style, quirks and ways to tell a story. You will only become adept as a reviewer or writer through a great deal of practice as well as reading.

Oh. Apparently not. Sorry. :(

You don't become a good writer by copying another person's style. I'm not going to sell a science-fiction story because I can ape Philip K. Dick's style completely, but because I have my own style, quirks and ways to tell a story. You will only become adept as a reviewer or writer through a great deal of practice as well as reading.
When I wrote my first stories (long-since gone from the internet), I did them in a script-like format because I was uncertain of how a novel-esque format would go. When I wrote this "review", I wanted to make it a sort of "offshoot" of (and compliment to) the GSHGHP with the same format -- and I credit Matt and his site for the format with a link to said site.

However, none of that excuses what I did...or, for that matter, how horrible I feel over the whole thing.

Just off the top of my head, putting the almanac-type info in a sidebar (the game's contents, etc.), and leaving the body open to your review would already make it worlds different from Matt's page. I would also put thumbnails within my text, clicking on them to expand.
If I knew how to do that, I would. I know very little about HTML.

Matt didn't invent using Verdana or that layout, but "flattering" would be far from my vocabulary when describing your aping of it.
In all honesty, I don't know of any other sites that review game show board games in detail. And again, I wanted to make my reviews a sort of GSHGHP-esque pages. Still, that doesn't excuse what I did -- either that review will be the only one in that style, or it'll be changed once a second review is written in a different style.

The actual content was okay, and covered a board game I was curious about.
This, in essence, was the whole point of my review -- going in-depth on the games that the GSHGHP, at this time, does not.
