...in a sports article about his personal effort to stop the use of chewing tobacco. He's 84, and devotes a great deal of his time to traveling the country and speaking out against tobacco (he quit chewing 50 years ago). He recently recovered from brain surgery, and he looks great at 84.

Joe is incredible for doing this - there's a lot of guys in the majors who still chew, though not as many because the risks are now known. I think it was Jim Bouton (live-wire pitcher of the 70's and author of two fine baseball books, "Ball Four" and "I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally") who created Big League Chew as a bubble-gum substitute for chaw.
