Joe is incredible for doing this - there's a lot of guys in the majors who still chew, though not as many because the risks are now known. I think it was Jim Bouton (live-wire pitcher of the 70's and author of two fine baseball books, "Ball Four" and "I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally") who created Big League Chew as a bubble-gum substitute for chaw.
