Merv Griffin's Word for Word board game[/quote]This is actually a neat little game. One of our local newspapers runs a puzzle similar in format: given a long word, find as many shorter words using just the letters in the long word.

Quaint by today's standards, but it has playing power to spare. Words don't age, and the anagram round is a nice cap.
If you didn’t create it, it isn’t your content.

But do you have to write them backwards like on the show?

I had two of these three back in the '70s.  Word for Word is worth a bid; it's pretty easy to play and explain to others.  The Gong Show board game is nothing like the show, has no gong toy, and isn't as much fun at parties as one would think.

Which is pretty much why I've always wondered the point of a board game based on a talent competition (see also the American Idol board game).

As I've said many times, the point of a board game is to sell lots and lots of copies so that the board game company makes money.  Nothing else.  Putting the name of a TV show on the cover of a box has historically been one of the easiest ways to do that.

There are countless examples of board games "based on" TV shows that have nothing whatsoever to do with the show, they just have the show's art on the materials.  At least in our little niche, most of the TV shows that are already games make a more logical transition to a box game format. But not always.  The talent shows are a good example, but my favorite is probably the board game "based on" I've Got A Secret, a weird, complicated mess of an effort that obviously couldn't capture anything about what made the TV show interesting.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

I always liked the title of that one. "How about a game of Barney Miller with the 12th precinct gang?"

"Got any jacks?"

"Go Fish."
