Last year at this time, Georgia State School Superintendent Kathy Cox became the first contestant to win $1 million on "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?"

Three months after the taping, she and her husband filed for bankruptcy.

Today, the million dollar check remains in the hands of Fox Broadcasting, as a legal fight continues over who should have the money.

A year later and this is still not resolved. I wonder if there's a time limit for collecting cash winnings from game shows. Checks themselves are generally good for six months from the date appearing on them.

ABC News (national) ran a story about this on their evening news tonight (I haven't found a link on their site yet).  No major new developments in the story.

Bumping this up to report that a settlement will be considered by the courts next week....$500,000 goes to the schools Cox wanted to give the prize money to, while the rest goes to creditors.

Took them a year to come up with that?
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
