This may be worth a watch.  I was scared how MTV may bastardize the show, but I am pretty impressed with what I saw.

Hopefully if this goes well, it will get picked up for more than 20 shows.

Hell, by letting the stars get their drank on during the taping, it might be the most faithful revival yet.

Is it just me, or are the squares oblong?

Yes, it appears the board was built with a 16x9 aspect ratio in mind. Welcome to 2012, I say.

Having just seen the first ep, I'm pleased with the results.
  • I came in expecting to know less than half the people, and that was the case. I recognized a few names, but for all I know, some of these are the Hip-Hop equivalent of Teresa Ganzel and Henry Polic II.
  • The material was an interesting mix, much like we saw on the original series.
  • The "Can I watch it with my parents" factor wasn't too bad. They had a question about the shape of "a pig's junk", and their version of the Secret Square is called the G-Spot, but they censored other things.
  • The prize budget is small, but I didn't have a problem with that. The end game is a single question worth $2,500.

their version of the Secret Square is called the G-Spot.
Which was a terrific pun, given the prize.

The prize budget is actually more than what your run of the mill GSN show would give away.

I was impressed with what I saw, and I will definitely continue to tune in.  The "guess which of the three celebs out of the row you picked is not bluffing" bonus round is neat, as well.

For their demo, they had a good stable of stars. I'm glad they strayed away from question-bad joke-real answer responses and let the stars do their own thing. And I'm glad MGK was given a couple bumps before the taping started.

I like this version Squares enough that I want to watch more. I couldn't think of a single highlight from one particular celeb, but the atmosphere did not drag the show down. What I saw is a relevant-to-the-young'uns, but faithful revival of a classic format. Thankfully MTV2 has the premiere episode up.

My review with my thoughts, pics, and an embed of the 1st episode. Within are some details about the episode (mild spoilers?), but nothing that determines the outcome of the game.

Didn't catch the full episode, but it looked pretty well-done. Pacing was awkward at times, but still flowed pretty well. I'd say this is a pretty good revival.

My takes in a nutshell...

\ At the risk of being labeled an old fuddy duddy, I didn't recognize the first panelist on Tuesday's debut.  Even with that, and a gripe I brought up over the stars being in *rectangles* instead of *squares*, I was surprisingly impressed by the debut.

\ Peter Rosenberg seemed a bit robotic -- asking a civilian player if (s)he (dis)agrees with a particular star's answer seemingly every time.

\ The stakes are alarmingly low compared to MTV's "The Substitute" (either the entire class splits $5000 or one player takes all the money; this as opposed to the $2500 bonus round).

...even with the problems, HHS provided a fun atmosphere.  If they can turn negatives into positives going forward, I wouldn't be surprised if this lasted six seasons.

I know I am getting old when I do not know any of the stars. LOL

I think they did a good job on this overall. The pacing should get better once they have a few shows under their belt.

I forgot, is this a weekly show?

Everyone who complains about the money has forgotten that rounds are for $500, the G-Spot for $1,000, and the bonus game can take you well over $5,000 all up.

In order for that to happen, they have to finish three complete games. Unless they can get hold of MGK's meth dealer to take care of the rest of the on-air talent, seems unlikely. :)
