"You're full of it"
« on: April 27, 2012, 07:32:09 PM »
Many years ago, I had the idea for a Pyramid main-game category called YOU'RE FULL OF IT, which would be people or characters with the initials B.S. (I know it's immature. I was a teenager.) I didn't know have enough to flesh it out, at least not without being overly dependent on singers. The other day, with a more well-rounded knowledge base and 30 more years of history to draw from, I came up with this list. I can't be objective, because I wrote it, so I'm asking my fellow viewers. Are there better names I could have used? Would you put them in a different order? (I deliberately put space between the singers and between the fictional characters.)

Bruce Springsteen
Bart Simpson
Bob Saget
Barbra Streisand
Brenda Starr
Ben Stein
Britney Spears

I'd hold either "Ben Stiller" or "Bob Stewart" in reserve in case there was a problem on the set and we needed an 8th name to play.

Some other names that I considered:
Bill Shatner
Bubba Smith
Bernie Saunders
Barry Sanders
Bessie Smith
Bull Shannon
Barney Stinson
Boris Spassky
(Buffalo) Bob Smith
the Boston Strangler

Some of the names, like Boris Spassky and the Boston Strangler, would probably fly with the 70's audience but not the 80's/Donnymid audience.

I'd pull Brenda Starr and come up with a good contemporary sports figure. Or, actually, I like using Barney Stinson a lot too.

Also, you are a rat-bastard for writing a "names" category. :)

I was always a fan of the "names" categories, but honestly, they really had to be huge names that everybody would know, and Saget, Stein and (especially) Starr don't make that cut.  Almost anybody on your list would be better than Brenda Starr.  "B.S." is a clever idea that I just don't think ends up being real-world practical.

Other possibilities (all of which still have issues) might include Blake Shelton, Bram Stoker, Barbara Stanwyck, Bella Swan, Brian Setzer and Bart Starr.

This seems like it would be more at home on NPR's Weekend Edition, as opposed to Pyramid.
If you didn’t create it, it isn’t your content.

Chris: I wanted to put in a sports figure, but I couldn't come up with one that I thought was gettable for the average player. I can't think of a current one with those initials. If I did, I'd probably drop Britney Spears first because I have two other singers on the list. And I plead guilty on the rat bastard charge.

Kevin: I had Bugsy Siegel a couple days ago and forgot to include him.

Matt: You pretty much nailed the difficulty in writing this category. I thought of Blake Shelton and Bram Stoker as well. Blake has the plus that he's a current TV personality, and Bram Stoker's name was included in the title. I might use him if this were a tournament category. (They used to make frequent use of "people who have appeared on Broadway", and it was mostly people who were better known for film or TV. In a tournament game, they included Michael Crawford.) Bart Starr is another one that might have worked in the 70's but not now. And I'm pretty sure I actually saw Barbara Stanwyck come up.

Makes me wonder if you would welcome or have a panic attack if your Pyramid partner was Will Shortz.  Well, unless the category "NAMES WHERE THE FOURTH LETTER OF THE LAST NAME IS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN AND ANAGRAMMED TO GIVE YOU THE FIRST NAME OF A CABINET MEMBER".  Then you're set.
Portions of this post not affecting the outcome have been edited or recreated.

Perfect for this category and I didn't see it anywhere else in this thread:

Bob Stewart.

Hey, they used "Goodson" in the Alphabetics round on PP and SP.

So he did. I just looked at the two lists, not the sentences. Mea culpa.
