Richard Dawson Tribute
« on: June 05, 2012, 10:41:31 PM »
Just had a conversation with one of the VPs at GSN who says he and the network are proud of the tribute they've put together. "We had the time to do it right," "True to our roots" and "respectful to the family" are among the phrases he shared in describing something I feared might have been little more than a throwaway.

Here's hoping!

Very rarely do I play the role of a pessimist, and I'll definitely be tuning in for this tomorrow night but I can't help notifcing that GSN only goes "above and beyond"  when someone dies..Look at what they did for the Merv Griffin tribute, and now for Richard Dawson....

It would be way easier to plan for and program this sort of thing if there was a way to know when a celebrity was going to die. Given that is generally not the case, we take what we can get and say thanks.

(I'd like to make the point that since I like and respect Aaron, I was being gentle. :) )

It is extremely easy to plan, the AP does it all the time and that is why we sometimes see reports of a celebrity's death along with a full obituary and review of their life prematurely.

That's a really fair point. You'd think GSN could be putting together the Barker tribute for when the day comes.

At St. Martin's in the 1990s, we acquired biographies about celebrities that we assumed would die shortly, so that we could release them days after they died.  This practice lasted for only two celebrities:  Frank Sinatra, whose book didn't sell well (mostly because it wasn't very good), and Katharine Hepburn, who didn't have the courtesy to die a few months after we bought the rights to it, but waited five years (we finally threw in the towel and published it in 2000; I suspect it was on the remainder tables when she finally passed).

I'm pretty sure GSN made some plans for this.

Dick Clark's tribute was lacking compared to this.

This got me thinking: when that day comes, what the hell could/would GSN do for a tribute?

Offhand, if they really, truly weren't going to be able to show Price, they have Match Game, Tattletales, I've Got a Secret and Family Feud episodes that feature Bob.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

That's an understatement.

I'll point out that's the same Price that they blew off in the Top Fitty Shows Evar thing.

Air TPIR or never be taken seriously again.

Throw some cash in T-Bills or a CD or something. Save up so you can do four hours of that. And buy extra bandwidth for the website.

I'll point out that some people said this during the Nifty Fifty as well. :)
