Stupid Pyramid question
« on: June 27, 2012, 08:22:59 PM »
I've been on a Pyramid kick as of late (guess the news about the GSN version helps...) so I've been watching a lot of episodes off of YouTube, mostly the '70s stuff...Cullen and $20K.  I watched a bit of the last week of $20K, and wondered when did they put trilons in the main game board too?  Is it a safe wager that they came when the plastic host podium did?

No, the pyramid came first.  I was at a taping in January 1980 when Steve O'Brien made a big deal about the new category pyramid.  The rest of the set looked the same.

Thanks all...now for another stupid question.  What's the record for illegal clues given in the WC?

And SFQuizKid....would this be the same Steve O'Brien from WCBS-FM?

I'd have to think it would be Jackee Harry's three: "contacts" for Things with a Lens, "stuffed animals" for Things that are Stuffed and "a wave top" for Things with a Crest.

I heard someone say that no one will ever break the record for consecutive no-hit games (2), because to beat it, he'd have to do three. It's hard to imagine someone giving four illegal clues in one round. (As an aside, I've definitely heard two in a single turn at the main game, but I don't think I've heard three.)

The three-fer was tied by Dick Cavett on the 100K in 1987, and Freddie Prinze got three buzzes on the syndie 25K in 1974, according to reliable sources. These same sources, though, say that a female contestant gave the clues to Dick Shawn in the summer of 1973 and got buzzed on the first four categories and time ran out on the fifth. This may even have been the first $0 Winner's Circle.

This thread claims there was an episode where Kaye Ballard gave four illegal clues...

I believe Colin Mochrie also hit a triple on Donnymid.

It was POSSIBLE to give illegal clues on Donnymid? What the hell did he do, pull a Mindy Elise Grayson and read the subjects outright?

I'm almost positive it is.

Even Adrienne Barbeau got ostensibly a triple-buzz one time. In fact, I think it should be airing on GSN soon. She got buzzed on the fourth and fifth categories, and during the commercial, got sort of unofficially buzzed on the sixth.

Flex (the UPN/CW sitcom "One on One") got 0 in the Circle, but I can't remember if there were mutliple buzzes.

Not a shameless plug.
