Press Your Luck Episode Guide
« on: June 02, 2013, 04:51:31 PM »

Hello everyone!

I know I\'ve been relatively out of the woodworks for what seems like an eternity. But with school, hockey, swing dancing, and the occasional board game night going on, life gets in the way.

However, with my favorite show back on the air on GSN, I thought to myself, \"JD, you still have the guide... why not?\"

While tiring, continuing to work on the PYL episode guide has been a real labor of love, and I thought I\'d give it another go and complete any gaps that I can.

With that said, it\'s back!

I know it\'s very basic and bareboned right now, but the most important thing I wanted to get back up was the episode guide in hopes people will use it once again, especially now that we\'re approaching the end of GSN\'s current new lease. Happy viewing, and I hope y\'all enjoy!

/ Yes, I call myself JD when I think to myself.

// Yes, I just brought these back.

Jason a few things to help you for your guide (Great to see you back, BTW):

The pilot was apparently taped on May 18, 1983, according to this site: http://www.cbstelevisioncity.com/shows\'>http://www.cbstelevisioncity.com/shows

Former associate director, Rick Stern, mentioned \"burning\" one episode early on. The episode in question was #066. According to him, the game \"sucked\" (but didn\'t recall why), so they invited back the same three players, and replaced the \"burned\" one with #067 (Frank/Nancy/A.J.)

There was no PYL on 1/2/84, because of special programming.

The \"lost\" BTS episode is really #500, according to some old GSN PDFs I dug up from 2008. John/Sheila/Yvonne was really #560.

Finally, the skipped 10/4/85 episode, had Mike/Jean/Faye as the contestants, according to a flashback clip seen in some 1986 episodes http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/1656/mike530.png\'>http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/1656/mike530.png

A couple things to help my clarity (and probably Jason\'s too.) The GSN PDFs of late did skip #66, even though there was no gap in the episode continuity. I think it was a Facebook post, but can you link to Stern\'s comments about the \"burned\" episode? Not doubting you... would just love to see it for myself.

Also at the end of the 12/30/83 episode, Peter specifically mentioned that they wouldn\'t be on Monday, so there was definitely no 1/2/84 episode.

Straight from Rick Stern\'s mouth:

I remember that we did burn one show early on... because the game sucked. ...don\'t remember exactly why ... But that early in the run, Bill and CBS agreed to burn it and have all three people back. I seem to recall that the winner didn\'t win much money.

Great stuff Jason!  Glad to see it back.

Now that GSN has helped us fill in all of 1983, I hope eventually they\'ll pick up the remaining 1986 episodes!

Which makes sense, as 1/1/1984 was a Sunday, so the Tournament of Roses Parade and Cotton Bowl football game (both aired by CBS, I think - more sure about the football than the parade) would have been on Monday 1/2.

Indeed, there was both the Rose Parade Coverage AND the Cotton Bowl here in Los Angeles, so most definitely no PYL. But this brings up a question that I never thought about here in my little Los Angeles bubble.

I know most major networks would carry those bowl games every New Year\'s Day, but is the Rose Parade really covered nationally on every station? I ask this because it seems like the Rose Parade is more of a regional thing much like the Mummer\'s Parade in Philadelphia, and I only recently saw one nationally on WGN, I think it was.

Then again, I feel like it\'s a huge deal here, but doesn\'t always appeal to most of the rest of the country? Thoughts?

/ On-topic: Thank you for the help!

The Rose Parade still gets national coverage.  ABC has the official contract currently (this year\'s coverage was hosted by GMA anchor Josh Elliott and then recently injured SportsCenter anchor Hannah Storm), but since it\'s a public event, NBC and some cable networks carry some of the parade live as well. I work for an ABC station and I distinctly remember seeing some of the coverage. I think it used to be a bigger New Year\'s Day (or the day after) tradition nationwide.  It seems to have less prominence lately.

I don\'t believe NBC does the Rose Parade anymore. I think HGTV makes a big to do about it too.

Actually, does ABC even carry it either? I was under the impression it moved to ESPN with the Rose Bowl.

I wonder also if Bob Eubanks still hosts local coverage in LA. I got the program from the 1995 parade somewhere.

I suppose you can still learn stuff on TLC, though it would be more in the Goofus & Gallant sense, that is (don't do what these parents did)"- Travis Eberle, 2012

Yes, Bob Eubanks still hosts the local L.A. coverage on KTLA.

And back in 1984, Bob Barker was still hosting the local coverage for CBS\' L.A. affiliate, which was still called KNXT-TV, but changed its name to KCBS-TV on April 2 of that year.

As I said, I work for an ABC station.  It aired on my station (in place of The View), which is nowhere near Pasadena. Why are you questioning that? I\'m pretty sure NBC had coverage as well. Affiliates may have been able to opt out if they chose.

One of our integral cogs at Family Bidness, Inc. is out and that means I take up her gig: process and route incoming mail. Tomorrow is set to be a full bin worth of mail to be dealt with. It\'s a good thing I\'m done with school for the quarter because I am going to be on edge all day tomorrow.
