60 Greatest Game Shows Ever in TV Guide
« on: June 11, 2013, 06:49:37 PM »

Quick heads-up.  TV Guide is doing another laundry list of the greatest games of all time.  \"Almost Anything Goes\" makes it. \"Big Showdown\" does not.

Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

But what we all want to know is...WHERE DOES FREAKIN\' STUDS RANK?????????

/I\'ll probably like the list from a couple of years back better, from the pre-EW wannabe TVG phase.  You know, the one that acknowledges the Cullen Pyramid.

No. I honestly do not care where Studs, nor any other program, ranks on this particular list.

There\'s lots of people on the forum where I would extend the courtesy of thinking that he was joking and let it be. James Fabiano is not on that list.

In, somewhat, seriousness wasn\'t Studs only on GSN\'s list for the greatest 50 game shows of all time?

Obviously, you are like Violet of Peanuts and \"don\'t know sarcasm when you see it.\"

And oddly enough... Studs IS on the TVG list, albeit a part of the Other 50 section.  Not that I care or anything...

As I got the issue, I can tell you that the Top 5 was just the combo of shows I thought it would be.  J!, WOF, Feud, Match Game, and TPIR.  And Millionaire, Squares, Password, WML?, and Newlywed round out the ten, in that order.     Not too offensive of a list, actually.  Good balance of the real classics and token modern entries. Order is up for debate by all as per the usual with lists like this, of course.

One comment, re: the Squares entry...why is it that, once the \'90s ended, it\'s become generally fashionable to bury the Bergeron version?  (Which TVG does, and many others have online.  And no, they don\'t mention the Davidson version)  It was a good revival, IMO.  Yes the comedy was more racy and it became all about Whoopi, but it was true to the original.  Then again, when you look at the revivals it was up against at the time...

...and once again, people are analyzing the list WAY more than the people who wrote the list did.

Hey, credit where due.  With the exception of the absence of Pyramid, a show adored more by serious fans of the genre than the general public, that\'s not a bad ten.

This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

Is it really? I could probably choose any ten from my own group of top twenty and it would be passable assuming the next ten were numbers 11-20. And I think anybody who doesn\'t fall into our \"special\" membership could do the same and avoid the land mines of snubbing a classic in favor of Zooventure or The Neighbors because that happens to be a pet favorite or they have a bunch of episodes on tape.

Interesting that It\'s Academic made the list, considering it\'s mainly a local program....no real issue with any of the ones on the list.

The list itself isn\'t that bad, although I do scratch my head at Don Adam\'s Screen Test making the list.

At least this time out they added Press Your Luck and Tic Tac Dough, and even Gambit, to the overall list. But they excluded Quiz Kids, Dream House, The Who, What, Or Where Game, Family Game Night, Talkabout, not to mention The Big Payoff.

Cordially,

And why should any of those six with the exception of 3Ws quality?
I suppose you can still learn stuff on TLC, though it would be more in the Goofus & Gallant sense, that is (don't do what these parents did)"- Travis Eberle, 2012

Right. For the most part, the list was shows that most people have heard of, or were familiar with (i.e. \"Remote Control\"), not just GSF fan favorites.

I liked \"Russian Roulette\" and \"Split Second\"...doesn\'t mean I\'m feeling slighted because they aren\'t up there.

And yeah, we may overanalyze the list...but we\'re fans. It\'s our job dammit. ;)
