What's interesting about that is I understood the metaphor/allegory of standing on the barrels of the revolver, chuckled at the premise and people dropping out of the game and went about my way without a second thought.

One night in the summer of '02, I showed it to my friend, who was very surprised that a show with that name made it to air. When he mentioned it, I was a little surprised myself...

Back when stuff like Family Challenge and What Would You Do, et al were on the air, one of the stunts would be essentially Russian Roulette, but with pies.  Watching those things as a kid led to a basic understanding of RR as a teenager and thus no real aversion or shock.

If this was on GSN or some other cable channel, no one would likely pay attention, but on a broadcast network that lost the benefit of the doubt a long time ago, people are going to automatically assume the worst intentions.

Debt's "Debt-O-Nator" was a cheesy explosion sound with a cheesy camera shake on a cheesy show that didn't take itself "dark lighting" seriously.

Think Fast's "Time Bomb" was a cheesy 4 X 8 foot piece of fabric that was shown on screen for 0.5 seconds. the name actually had relevance to the gameplay because it controlled the amount of time for the second player (depending on what day you watched).

There's clearly no pleasing anyone. I would think that if there was a show that scrupulously went out of its way to promote safety and good habits and proper usage of firearms it would be Top Shot. I suppose if there's an activist group that's against violence toward dinner plates, they'd have a beef, but really now.

I don't know if you can pin this on the network itself but they did buy the show: given that Fifth Grader (and even moreso Lyrics could hardly be arsed to trek off-reservation to have an interesting format I can't imagine Boom! treading any significantly new ground.

I don't think I'd be able to disagree with anyone who thought Top Shot was gun porn.  On the other hand, my personal takeaway from the episodes I saw was that gun handling is a skill, one that you shouldn't just assume every Tom, Dick, or Harry has.

/They also use things other than guns.  That's always interesting.
