Money "Count-Offs"

Hello again and Happy New Year to all of you!  Let's hope for the best in y2k4.  It's been a long time since I have posted here.

I have a question.  What are the different game shows that did money count-offs, in which the host hands the money to the contestant and the audience participated in counting.  Here's what I can think of:

Scrabble
The Joker's Wild
Treasure Hunt

Anything else?

Didn't Jim Perry count out money on $ale? For some reason, I want to say he would do this during an instant bargain, if money were involved?

Perry did count out money on $otC when IB's included a $ale surprise.

Occasionally Bob will count out $500 for perfect IUFB or for the Shell Game bonus or Barker's Markers on TPIR.

Chuck counted out the buyout money a few times on Greed.

Eubanks would count out $500 for correct maingame predictions(to surveys out of 100 or Educated Guess question) on CS.

I remember Bert or Vicki counting out $5 the kids would win if they came out of the audience and help a team to guess a drawing on WLOD.

Monty would count out money on LMAD sometimes, especially during deals with a packet or bankroll of money.

Jim Lange would do this for the money won in the Melody Roulette round on Name That Tune.

And one thing I found out recently is that they have to give the money back at the end of the show and they later receive a check.
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

 1) That's only if the Sale Surprise was won.  If the contestant decided not to buy and the bell went off, Jim just read how much it was, which was written on the envelope.

2) Later in the run, Bob just flat out gave them the five $100 bills.

EUbanks was still counting them out in mid-1988, as we've seen over recent weekend CS airings on GSN.

So did Tom Kennedy, no?

Yes. However, in the case of $2,000 being won on Melody Roulette, he'd count the first thousand in hundreds and then hand them a thousand dollar bill.

I wonder if he did money countoffs on Doctor I.Q.?  I guess the only way to find out would be to ask him; I suspect the show was either done live or the tapes/kineoscopes haven't survived.

"Is there a doctor in the balcony, lady?"

Another show that did this was Marshall HS. In the last few NBC years, there was the "pick a star, win the prize in the envelope" bonus round after a match was won. If the top prize, $5000 in cash, was won, Peter would count it out in thousand dollar bills to the player.

I think I recall Eubanks counting out $500 that was part of a room of furniture that was won on Dream House.

No he didn't. There's one surviving episode of Tom's run as host, and he simply yells "Give that lady five silver dollars!" or words to that effect. Quite a wise decision, all things considered. Kind of hard to get an audience worked up about $5, even in the late '50s when it bought a matinee show, a candy bar, a new pair of shoes, dinner at the Palm Restaurant, a necktie, a leather briefcase, a color television, and, with the change left over, a gold box filled with diamonds.

That's right.

I think the only *possible* instances I know of game show contestants keeping cash "awarded" onstage were the quickie deals over the credits on "LMAD"--and Monty's "go on out and have a great dinner on us" $50 or $100 to losing couples on pricing deals for cars.  That's because they never gave out anything over $600 in those quickie deals, meaning that they didn't have to report the winnings to the IRS--and the contestants probably fudged on the money come income tax time, too.

Of course, there is the fact that no hoity-toity LA restaurant would let "LMAD" contestants in wearing the costumes they had on.
