Survivor All-Stars Cast Released

Here's the list:

Survivor One: Richard Hatch, Rudy Boesch, Sue Hawk and Jenna Lewis.

Austrailian Outback: Tina Wesson, Colby Donaldson, Amber Brkich, Jerri Manthey and Alicia Calaway.

Africa: Ethan Zohn, Lex van den Berghe and Tom Buchanan.

Marquesas: Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien and Rob Mariano.

Thailand: Shii Ann Huang.

Amazon: Jenna Morasca and Rob Cesternino.

Pearl Islands: Rupert Boneham

Not bad having four out of the seven winners competing.  It's nice to see that some of the players who should have gone farther (Shii Ann and Rupert immediately jump to mind) were invited back as well.  For more info, here's the link to the story on Yahoo: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...vivor_all_stars

If they would only let this series fade away into the sunset...
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

You don't kill a hit.

And between Rupert, Johnny Fairplay and the whole pirate theme (and yes, even the Outcasts), "Pearl Islands" was up there with the first series as a great piece of television.  I'm looking forward to seeing some of the old gang in this new situation--should be fun.

And if you want to blame "Survivor" for killing off the Great Quiz Show Revival of 1999-2000, the truth is that it would have died off of its own volition anyway.

Winning Lines and Twenty One were toast before Survivor saw air, so in no way do I fault the Mark Burnett inspiration for the end of the quickie revival. And Greed died because of the week-long experiment that was It's Your Chance Of A Lifetime for inexplicable reasons.

You have got to be kidding. Kill off a compelling series that has stayed in the top 20 consistently since its premiere? Not to mention all the merchandising that makes it a "cash cow"? CBS is wise to kick the next run off right after the single biggest television event of the year.

Besides, Who needs that Lingerie Bowl? We have Richard and Rupert. Now that's a matchup I want to see!

...and if I recall, didn't CBS launch Survivor I after their last Super Bowl?

That was Survivor II: Australian Outback.  The original Survivor premiered towards the end of May in 2000.

I was expecting Vecepia Towery (Marquesas), Brian Heidik (Thailand), and Sandra-Diaz Twine (Pearl Islands) to make the list.

I wonder why they didn't make it, even though they were the most recent batch of Sole Survivors.

From snippets that I have heard or read in the past couple months (mostly Entertainment Weekly), some people just didn't want to play again.  It was mentioned that at least one of the game's winners would not be participating, and I was actually expecting Tina to be one of the winners to decline the invitation.

Also, Mark Burnett knows how to do casting.  Brian would not have added much to the mix (really boring, except for the adult film thing which didn't come up during the game) and I don't think Sandra would have lasted too long unless she completely changed her strategy the second time around.  Many of the other players would know that a loose cannon like Sandra, with her voting to save her own hide, is too much of a danger to keep (still love you though Sandra!)

I wonder if Mike from Survivor II was considered, since he was forced out due to his hands getting fried rather than being voted out.  It would have been nice to see him get a second chance, even though I didn't really like the guy.

You know what? That reminds me of poor Osten!

He wanted to quit the game, and that's what he got!

Anybody want to bet on Richard Hatch being the first one voted off the island?  He won Survivor 1, of course, but look what's happened since.  He didn't make it past A$1,000 on the Australian version of Millionaire, and he was the first to go on the Survivor-themed Weakest Link.

Even better, who wants to bet that the four previous Sole Survivors who are on the all-star show go in quick order?

Let's see .... Match Game got killed while was still hot, twice, IIRC.  Hollywood Squares got killed while it was hot, so says Peter Marshall in his book.  I could go on.

In an ideal world, Mark, you would be right, but the world isn't ideal.

Actually, Rich bombed on the $500 question on the Aussie WWTBAM.

Sue Hawk and Jeff Varner (joined by Kaya from Temptation Island) also lost in USA Network's Cannonball Run 2001 series.

There was a clip of it on Jamie's page, but I didn't get a chance to see it before he started having trouble with his page.  All I knew was that he didn't make the first milestone.  Served him right, IMO.

Complete agreement.  The more famous the player, the more there's going to be a big bullseye on his/her back.  I'm guessing Rudy & Colby might not make it out of the first half either.

Hollywood Squares got killed while it was hot, so says Peter Marshall in his book. I could go on.
And I'm sure if you ask Jerry Van Dyke, he'll say that My Mother The Car just needed time to find its audience.

Neither HS nor MG were "hot" when they were cancelled, merely aging shows that were still pulling in respectable numbers.  True, there are many factors that go into when a show's plug is pulled, but the suggestion that Survivor needs to "fade away" while it's still one of the hottest shows in television deserves all the incredulity we can summon.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.
