(T)he suggestion that Survivor needs to "fade away" while it's still one of the hottest shows in television deserves all the incredulity we can summon.
Oh, I agree wholeheartedly, and X gets the square on this one.  CBS would be out of their minds to do this.  I do think they're taking a bit of a gamble with the all-star series, but for what it's worth, I will be returning to the tube to see this one. It should be really fun, if nothing else.

Just when you think Survivor is past its use-by date, the show always comes up with new twists that stop the strategic contestants from being able to manipulate with their well-crafted plans.

Some of my personal favourites were:

* Switching Tribes in Africa
* Having the two tribes living together in Thailand... and letting them think that they'd merged
* The outcasts having the chance to be voted back in in Pearl Islands

And with three tribes on All-Stars, there's gotta be some change to the expected dynamic... not to mention the fact that everyone probably thinks they've got the game worked out now, and is playing against everyone else who has the same thoughts

Let's see .... Match Game got killed while was still hot, twice, IIRC.  Hollywood Squares got killed while it was hot, so says Peter Marshall in his book.  I could go on.

The Daily syndie MG didn't exactly pull in stellar numbers in 1981-82, nor did the Vegas season of syndie Squares a year earlier. MGPM died in part because weekly syndie game shows were on life support(it and Kennedy NTT were the only syndie game shows not running five days a week at the time, and both were axed after the 1980-81 season) The CBS MG7x and NBC HS were pulling in decent numbers when axed IIRC.

CBS has already greenlit a Survivor 9 for next fall, and with Friends gone, to be replaced by spin-off Joey.  Given NBC's recent track record with new sitcoms, this is CBS's chance to build a Thursday dynasty of its own.  They're definitely riding the Survivor boat as long as it sails.  OTOH, Ray Romano is thinking of hanging it up, but that's for another board.

ObGameShows: The first promo I saw for Everybody Loves Raymond was during TPiR's 25th Anniversary Special.

WWBGD=What Will Brad Garrett Do? If Raymond doesn't continue and the inevitable cancellation of Squares, Sony just might have to bring on Brad Garrett's Hot Potato.

I was expecting Vecepia Towery (Marquesas), Brian Heidik (Thailand), and Sandra-Diaz Twine (Pearl Islands) to make the list.

I wonder why they didn't make it, even though they were the most recent batch of Sole Survivors.

Well, the basic idea was to bring back the most memorable contestants, and in Survivor's history, the winners haven't always been memorable.

According to this week's TV Guide, Burnett went in with the rule that simply being a million dollar winner wasn't enough. There had to be something else. Some people turned down the offer of returning. Colleen Haskell from Survior:Pulau Tiga is one and Elisabeth Filarski-Hasselbeck from The Australian Outback is another who turned down the opportunity to be on the show. This opened the door to less predictable choices like the forgettable, if cute, Amber Brkich.

I wonder if this edition will best the ratings of the franchise renewing "Pearl Islands" edition. I think it just may because everyone has a favorite from the beginning.

I, for one, can't wait.

You have got to be kidding. Kill off a compelling series that has stayed in the top 20 consistently since its premiere? Not to mention all the merchandising that makes it a "cash cow"? CBS is wise to kick the next run off right after the single biggest television event of the year.

Besides, Who needs that Lingerie Bowl? We have Richard and Rupert. Now that's a matchup I want to see!

...and if I recall, didn't CBS launch Survivor I after their last Super Bowl?
You guys, it's his opinion.  Perhaps he doesn't like Survivor.  I personally don't like it either--and wouldn't mind seeing it be cancelled.  Will it?  Probably not.  But that doesn't make his (or our) opinion any less valid.

I really like Survivor. I would replace Shii Ann with Brian Heidik, Amber with Jon "Johnny Fairplay" Dalton, and Alicia with Sandra Diaz-Twine.

Where's Colleen Haskell in all this? After all, her post-Survivor gig was that mediocre "The Animal."

One could only wonder if those scabs on her legs are still there four years later.  And Jonathan...Mediocre?  Given most of Rob Schneider's films, "mediocre" is almost favorable!

EDIT: I'd like to dedicate this post, my 420th, to Chris Lemon. :-)

I am in agreement there. Survivor may be a consistently strong show, but it doesn't mean it doesn't suck (see American Idol).

However, as much as I loathe it, CBS will have a golden opportunity when Friends dies its long-overdue death in May (Thank goodness). This is CBS' opportunity to make big on this; they better not blow it.

Joey won't go far this fall; I can almost guarantee that. With Friends and Frasier gone by June, that leaves Will & Grace as the longest running sitcom currently running on NBC. Since the writers have loused this one up in recent years, I would not be surprised if Death came a'knocking in 2005.

What I am saying is, though I personally think Survivor sucks, CBS better take this ball and run with it; Thursday Nights will soon be theirs.

That's the point I was trying to make earlier.  Syndie versions of regular shows seldom do better than the original network version.
