Watson's choice of column one, $800 was a good one according to this, and prescient.

Interesting to note that the practice of putting a DD in the top row at all was over with fairly early, and column one for $200 has no entry at all.

/Great data, lousy spelling. Maybe it's unfare to criticize the author for that, but here we are.

Wasn't it mentioned back then that Watson specifically analyzed that the DD was most often in that box?

That was in fact the joke--the original article spelled it "fair" when he meant fare as in "how a person would do" in the second graf.

Not a great joke, but one nonetheless, unless I missed a reference or something.

Ah, see, I was searching for that, but I only searched the article for "unfare." Didn't think to search for the positive version. Carry on. :)

Is it also safe to say that both Daily Doubles for round 2 have NEVER been in the same category?

I can't remember whether we were told that was a specific rule or not, but in half a century of Jeopardy!, I don't believe they've ever done it.  So yeah, that's a safe bet.

Only because to do so would be HUGELY lopsided if one contestant was much stronger in that particular category than their opponents, yeah, I'd say it's safe to say that.
