Existance questions...
« on: January 14, 2004, 09:17:06 AM »
I was wondering if the following shows exist. Please answer if you have any information:

-Jeopardy! 1978-1979- My favorite version because of the awkward rules and the awesome set.

-Concentration (syndicated 1973-1978)- I got an episode in a trade. What a weird show! It would be nice if there were some episodes that survived.

-Battlestars- Undoubtedly the coolest show of the early eighties.

-Pitfall- I don't mind the main game as much as most people do. Great set and music.

-Celebrity Sweepstakes (syndicated)- I heard that syndicated shows have a better chance of existing; why I don't know. I can dream, cant I?

A letter I wrote to GSN in 1996 asking about the existence of certain shows stated that this one still exists.  GSN has only aired one episode of it, though.

Although it's never been seen outside of its original run, it is widely rumoured that this is still around.  It's the NBC version (1958-73) that's widely gone.

-Battlestars- Undoubtedly the coolest show of the early eighties.

Since NBC's tape erasure is said to have happened in 1978, and because they showed another clip of it on the Alex Trebek "Life and Times" show, there's a good bet this is still around.

-Pitfall- I don't mind the main game as much as most people do. Great set and music.

Global TV in Toronto aired reruns of this into the mid-80s, so the tapes certainly got good use.

This is one of my all-time favorites so I hope it's still around.  But it's very likely that it's gone.  The pilot exists in the trade curcuit, and host Jim McKrell is reported to only have one episode in his collection.  However, we can always hope for a discovery a-la "Joker's Wild" or "Hollywood Squares" -- but if even if that happened, who would air it?

All those shows are known to exist in a vault someplace, the exception being the syndie Celeb Sweepstakes. A clip from Battlestars was shown on the CBC Trebek profile the other day, GSN supposedly has the late 70s J! run, I would think Goodson saved the 70s Concentration with the rest of the library(the NBC rights thing keeps it from being aired on GSN), and Pitfall did air in reruns on some Canuck stations as recent as about 1990.

I've been told by someone who should know, that most if not all of the NBC run of Concentration does exist, in kinescope form.  Not sure if any/all of the kinescopes are in color though; I have seen a color kinescope of the final NBC show.

The last 1973 show exists in COLOR???  Would I love to see that!  But if it only exists at a broadcast museum, there may not be much hope.

Last time I was at the Museum in Beverly Hills, they were up to four Celebrity Sweepstakes episodes, so if you wanted to at least see some, and were somewhat coastal, you do have a chance.

So does Classic Concentration. NBC owns that show.

So, this leads me to ask, if NBC owns Concentration, how come TPIR is owned by Fremantle and not CBS?

NBC bought the rights to Concentration from Barry & Enright so the show could continue to run on NBC without the taint of the quiz show scandals since B & E were prime movers in those and since Jack Barry was the original host of Concentration.

CBS never had any reason to buy the rights to TPIR.  Fremantle got control of it by purchasing Mark Goodson Productions.

The 1958-73 version of CONCENTRATION was not originally produced by G/T.  While they did produce the 1973-78 syndie and 1987-91 (plus two years of reruns) NBC run, Goodson merely leased the formatting rights.

EDIT:  OK, Mike beat me by a minute.  Dang fingers.  :)

Actually, NBC bought out B&E a few months before the quiz scandals broke out.  Even though "Twenty-One" got taken off quickly after the scandals broke, "TTD" did stay on a little longer (and undoubtedly unrigged), the morning music game "Dough Re Mi" stayed on for a few more years, and "Concentration" you know about.

I know for a fact that the complete run of Concentration is in one of our vaults, so is the MG/HS Hour :)

Just a question based on bricon's post - I want to make sure I understand. Were certain shows that would normally be on videotape by that time still be kinescoped? Would it be more likely that a mix of video tapes and kinescope films make up the original NBC Concentration library, or were kinescopes still used for some reason or another after the mid 60s? I'm not being sarcastic - just curious. Thanks.

Here in the hinterlands, there was a CBS station that, as late as 1975, used to show kinescopes of NBC programs not cleared by the NBC affil.  In addition, we used to have reruns of "Lidsville" on kinescope on one of the stations as late as 1977.

So they were videotaped shows recorded on film for playback elsewhere? (That's what I was trying to confirm - in my mind, kinescope is a film copy) Very interesting. Thank you, Jimmy.
