ABC Says Time for Return to Primetime Game Shows

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Television network ABC is counting on a
primetime quiz show and family-friendly dramas still in development to
help lift it from the ratings doldrums, executives said on Thursday.

This spring ABC plans to launch "Deal or no Deal," in which the
winning contestant in a quiz bargains for a briefcase that could hold
millions of dollars -- or nothing at all -- without knowing what is
inside.

The move marks a risky return to a genre that ABC has bet big on in
the past. The network scored a mega-hit with the primetime game show
"Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" but saw its fortunes plummet when the
audience for that show fell off abruptly in 2001.

"We think the time is right for the next generation of prime-time game
shows," ABC Entertainment President Susan Lyne told television critics
during a midseason programing update.

Will DoND prove to be the hit WWtBaM was, and if so, can it last? I'll hope so...

AT LAST some good news in the game show world.  I've read the writeup for this show at the Australian Game Show Page, and this looks COOL.

It starts with several hundred audience contestants, and it whittles down to just one who has the chance to win up to $2,000,000.

I, for one, want to know who's hosting (I'll host it! ;D).

This is indeed great news! So far, since the early 1990s, CBS has reigned supreme with the only network daytime game show left on the air: The Price Is Right.

It's wonderful to hear that ABC is getting back into the game! (Pun intended!)

 I think it's a primetime show.

COOL doesn't begin to describe it.  It has the potential to pick up where Millionaire-mania left off before ABC overexposed the show, based on the accounts I've seen.  It's also a case where the Lemon-coined 'mo money syndrome' should draw in audience numbers, at least for a little while.

Then again, this is America.  What works for others doesn't necessarily work here.

I'm not going to pitch a fit this time.  Rather, I'll just paraphrase a line said by the great Bill Cullen some 20 years ago "that this is the forum where we'll see if two threads really are better than one."

So Deal... will be ABC's primetime game show entry, and CBS may be inclined to continue and/or increase the frequency of Price primetime shows...

What is the status of NBC bringing back Dating & Newlywed Game to primetime, and does FOX have any potential game shows to counter-program with?

Though the syndicated plethera of game shows is taking a noticable cut, there is a slim chance that it *might* be made up for in the primetime hours, no?

Thanks for understanding. :-) Besides, the Yahoo press release was different from the one on L's thread, so I don't feel like as much of an ass as I did when I first saw it had already been posted...LOL

I have seen an episode of the Australian version of this show, and it's really fantastic. The Oz version wasn't a monster hit there...it moved slowly but moved to an amazing, crazy few minutes where the contestant has the opportunity to risk hundreds of thousands of dollars on a 1 in 4 bet. If ABC can properly streamline the show to get to the good part sooner, this could really be a hit for them.
