Short animated promos aired during The Goldbergs and Modern Family last night.

The Whammys were... not impressive, but they may not be the final product.

Crude looking as the original Whammys? Or modernized?

More crude imo.

It also seems to very strongly suggest that we're getting the classic board, and at least some of the values that will be on that board.

  • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.

Looks like they hired a bunch of Ludia staffers to create the graphics.  I'm not pining for exact replicates of the original series either, but those do not look crisp at all.

The whole thing here, even the lights around the board, are animated. I hope it's just for the promo. And the Whammies may not be cruder, we're just seeing them in HD.

I wonder if we're going to get a Big Board that takes advantage of 16X9 widescreen, with a few extra squares going across, which could create some opportunities for new square values/special spaces (possibly a 24-square, 9X5 board, or a 22-square 8X5 board, compared to the original 18-square 6X5 board).

Otherwise, if the board is still designed for 4X3, it's going to have wasted space on the sides.

I have no knowledge of what's in development, but it's possible that the "squares" could be ordinary 16:9 HD monitors. And if you arrange 16:9 monitors in a 5×5 square, they fill out a TV screen pretty much edge to edge. Maintaining the 6×5 arrangement from the original series using 16:9 monitors would result in a board with wasted space on the top and bottom. Then again, ABC is probably going to want there to be some open space in the corners for their bugs and promos.

Alternately, the show could cover the monitors with light borders that conceal the left and right edges so the monitors don't look so elongated. Or it's entirely possible that with a prime time budget, the show will use custom monitors, in which case they can make them just not-square enough to fill the amount of screen that they want.

That might just be a mock-up; I’m not sure they have even started taping yet...

Definitely looks like a mockup. I'm sure the real board would have at least a few prize squares, and I'd be surprised if they weren't using flatscreen monitors in 2019, even if they're mounted vertically (though that would look very awkward). Plus, the light pattern that surrounds the board looks like a CGI recreation.

I believe the first taping is on the 23rd.

What kind of screens did Gameshow Marathon use? Were they rear-projection?
"They're both Norman Jewison movies, Troy, but we did think of one Jew more famous than Tevye."

Now celebrating his 22nd season on GSF!

A bigger promo for the entire Fun and Games lineup is up, and PYL is the only one with no show clips- maybe that’s the board they used for runthroughs?

(As an aside, the CS set looks great, very retro...)

PYL begins taping on the 20th. Based on the Whammy clip, looks like they're remaking many of the skits used on the original with updated, yet crude looking, animation.

Great point. They could keep the same proportions and simply leave the space to either side. We'd see the light display behind the board, presumably with subtler lights.

Another note: The inclination is to start the show at the big board. Todd Newton's version never seemed right. The last player had too much of an advantage and there was no passing of spins.

What if...they did do a question round to earn spins but didn't show it on the air. They could put it online, not that everyone would watch but it would prove it's legit.

One thing I enjoyed about the "flashback" intro on the old Press Your Luck is that, in act 1, it let you have a taste of the excitement that was coming down the pike, and made the comparatively-less-exciting pill of the question round easier to swallow.

While the quiz round does have the feeling of being forced to eat your beets before dessert, it is functional and forgettable, but also a very clever way to almost assure that everyone will get to play the big shiny board, and also squelch runaway leader problems that a simple 90-second quiz session might have.
If you didn’t create it, it isn’t your content.
