Posture?

I adored the late Ira Skutch, but on a Match Game taped in 1978 or after, it came out that he criticized Gene Rayburn's posture. On the air, Gene made a deal out of standing up straight and mentioned the criticism.

It has struck me that by the syndicated run, the dinner-break beverage selection dragged down the host and some panelists--one commuted from Encino--more than it livened them up. Could that be it?

Now that I'm re-watching MGHSH on BUZZR, I see Gene doing a great job on his half of the show. He seemed to joke easily and enjoy horsing around with the new faces, this despite being saddled with Bowzer in the hot blonde's seat. NBC would have done well to air The Match Game Sans Hollywood Squares Half-Hour in a morning time slot.
