Need Help Finding Password Plus Episodes
« on: September 23, 2020, 09:32:47 AM »
If this isn’t the place for this, please feel free to move.

My pub trivia teammate’s mom was on Password Plus back in 1980. Her name is Carole, and her original broadcasts were preempted. His mom was able to pinpoint the week based on the episode guide (Nanette Fabray and Skip Stephenson). Does anyone have a rebroadcast of this week’s shows?

Thanks!

Just as a heads up, the Monday episode is here, but the rest of that week is not.

It sounds like this means you can take care of this request.  Could you or Jeremy confirm that this is so?  According to my records, I have two episodes from that week on VHS.  I'd be delighted to check if you need me to, but I'd also prefer not to go to the trouble if I don't have to.

I have the source copy of the Monday episode in the YouTube link, the Tuesday episode and Friday episodes from the first GSN airing.

Tuesday starts with Gerald vs Linda; Friday starts with Jack at Alphabetics.

None contain Carole.

I have Monday - Wednesday on hand, there's no Carole on Wednesday either. I've got Thursday's catalogued as "Tammie vs. Linda".
Methinks this isn't the week, unless she only lasted a game.

What was Carole's last name at the time?

Oh, wait, these were Cullen episodes?  Heck, I've got his entire run on DVD back home.  We'll solve this mystery yet!

What was Carole's last name at the time?

That...and could Carole also have gone by a different first name or spelled it differently?
Kinda intrigued, I've scanned the entries of about 300 Password Plus episodes I've got catalogued and see no Carole, but I see a few Carol's and Karol's...and none were during Bill's stint  ???

There is no Carole (or any other spelling) on the Nanette-Skip week.  There is a Carol Grenfeld (guessing on the last name spelling, of course) who appears on the third show of the following week, with Dick Gautier and Vicki Lawrence.  No other Carols in that week.

TIL:  The undefeated champ rule for PP was seven visits to Alphabetics, regardless of how much (or how little) money was won.  A dominant player who was literally on the entire week won $24,100.

Anyone else notice how douchy Skip was by totally ignoring Nanette during the intro?  Quite ungentlemanly...

According to my records, those were shows 336 - 340, taped on Monday, April 21, 1980. It was unusual for us to tape on a Monday. Emcee was Bill Cullen.

The show was pre-empted on Friday, 4/25/1980 (show #340) for an Iranian-hostage press conference.

Because of the pre-emption, we taped four shows, 351 - 354, on 5/12/80, also a Monday. Celebs were Susan Richardson and Bill Cullen, and Allen returned to the show after stringing us along for weeks with "I'm in the hospital but they don't know what's wrong with me". He later shared that the tabloids had been hounding him in the hospital, wanting to know if he had cancer (turns out he did). Up to that point, Betty didn't accompany him to the studio for every taping, but after his absence she came to every taping and did the driving.

Monday tapings were kind of fun because you might catch a glimpse of Johnny Carson who was taping TNT across the hall. However, it meant we couldn't go roaming around the backstage area of Johnny's set or read his monologue cue cards if they were left in place.

I wish I had saved all of that paperwork. I saved the ratings but would have to turn my place upside down to find them.

Bumping because my teammate’s mom got things very wrong, so I’m asking if we can take one more shot at this. She remembered a preemption, but her episodes were preempted for Reagan’s inaugural, not Iran Contra. Her name would have been Carol/Carole the week of January ‘81 with Elaine Joyce and Greg Morris. Any help y’all can provide this time around would me much appreciated!

I have the whole week. It looks like Carole was on for a total of four days.
