The Price is Right: The Barker Era just announced

"We’re going back to ’73! 50 fresh episodes from 1973 are coming to #ThePriceIsRight: The Barker Era channel starting Dec. 9. "

Not to sound like an ingrate, but these early TPiR eps., while interesting from a historical perspective, aren't nearly as enjoyable as ones from the '80s--the pricing game lineups are repetitive, the set is ugly as sin, and Bob is at his fakest, most-patronizing worst. I hope they move forward with the primary rotation soon as well.

Bob does not get to his patronizing worst until women have to reach into the $100 pocket.

And personally, I liked the original set. And I prefer the show as a half-hour. But that’s me.

Last week I watched an episode from about October of '72. I had to remind myself a few times that it was early in the run and that Bob wasn't being patronizing as much as he was explaining the rules to new contestants and viewers. But it definitely felt like ELI5 territory.

Presumably Barker was hired for The Price Is Right based on his Truth or Consequences experience, and on that show, he had the freedom to really drag out rules explanations, which probably influenced the way he approached Price.

Does anybody know how frequently stunts repeated on Truth or Consequences? Throughout his 35 years on Price, Barker would always overexplain pricing games that were new to him. But after a month or two, he'd find ways to get through the rules as quickly as possible, even though almost every contestant was equally unfamiliar with the game, no matter how many years it had been on the show.

I also appreciate the early episodes from a historical perspective, but the last time the Barker Era channel had a season one drop, I found that two hours straight of the earliest episodes got quite repetitive. And this time, the channel is airing 1973 episodes for five hours straight each day. But only for five days, as it appears this drop is to commemorate Barker's birthday, as evidenced by the following paragraph from the Facebook post:

Quote
Also, Celebrate the legend Bob Barker on BUZZR with Bob on classic game shows like #MatchGame, and a special Price Is Right marathon honoring his birthday, Dec. 12. #BUZZR

Buzzr's definition of "marathon" has historically been a little loose -- I'll be interested to see how long the TPIR marathon is and whether it's exclusive to the afternoon/evening.

"Pick a pair of products that have the same price" sticks out to this viewer. It's not terrible because you finish the instructions in one sentence and anything else comes about during the play of the game and Bob doesn't have to say there's a second chance built into the game, he just explains how it works that you choose which price to match.

I know we mentioned the sameness as it got to be year thirty but there's only so many ways to set up Double Prices or Squeeze Play, and it's fine to move through the game to get to Plinko or the Showcase Showdown.
If you didn’t create it, it isn’t your content.

Bob may have shortened up his spiels on the newer pricing games after they've been on rotation for a while, he loved to take time and explain the Showcase Showdown bonus spaces at least once per episode.

The only recurring element I remember Bob doing on T or C was the audience game with the 4 drawers -- with at least one with cash.  But that was likely a filler game if the planned skits ended early and the show needed to stretch.

He could do that if one of the longer games flamed out early. There were also times where the first spinner would be on the red carpet dot and as soon as Bob gets his cue it's off and running. It's designed so that it can expand or contract the time allotted for it.

There had been talk on this board about Comcast offering Buzzr on its Xumo Stream  box. This has now extended to its X1 cable box proper, along with Game Show Central, TPIR/Barker and Feud classic.  Still not recordable, but I appreciate the slightly easier access vs. firing up Pluto, and getting searchable listings for Buzzr.

For others who might find it useful, I stumbled upon the fact that Sling offers 10 hours of DVR space for its free users. It allows you to record its FAST offerings, whose game show channels include Buzzr, The Barker Era, Game Show Central, and Family Feud Classic.

Sling has a free tier?

EDIT: I'll be damned, so they do! Thanks for the tip!

I said the same thing and was pleased to see they have several options not found on Pluto, Tubi, etc.

Philo. 25 bucks a month. Buzzr, Barker Era, etc which are recordable. Problem is, the nets don't have their timing set up and not able to add time. I emailed their techs and they are still wrangling with the master control over it

I use it for this plus Discovery nets, AE Shows, etc

The web-based version doesn't wanna work for me, though. When I try to play Buzzr it starts a music stream instead. When I change a channel it starts the same stream over the top of the current one. Ad nauseum. Rather odd.
