Byron Allen buys WJRT in Flint.
« on: July 15, 2021, 06:49:36 PM »
My markets ABC affiliate Channel 12 was just purchased by entertainment mogul Byron Allen. We know how he does as a game show producer, but how is he as a station owner?
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

I've heard he was notoriously frugal as owner of The Weather Channel.

That’s…odd. I guess he’s trying to get himself in the local TV game?
I suppose you can still learn stuff on TLC, though it would be more in the Goofus & Gallant sense, that is (don't do what these parents did)"- Travis Eberle, 2012

I guess that's one way to ensure a station picks up Funny You Should Ask reruns.

Well, shut my mouth.

(Seriously was not aware of this development)

Byron is now eyeing the entire Tegna family of stations which could more than double what he has:

Some of the larger stations include KUSA/Denver, WTOL/Toledo and WKYC/Cleveland.

They've got quite a few big ones: Dallas (WFAA), Atlanta (WXIA), Houston (KHOU), and Washington (WUSA) are all top-10 markets with Tegna stations, plus at least 12 out of the next 20.

Clever way to call someone a cheapskate.

Is local TV a worthwhile business to be in any more? I was told my former station was having trouble selling air time.

There are AM radio stations where the land around the transmitter is more valuable than the station itself.

It sounds like the Byron's plans to acquire Tegna's stations is dead, so what do you do?

You look to buy the Denver Broncos!

I think owning the Denver Broncos is pretty good.
