Our long national nightmare is over

Will this be one of the rerun episodes on Sunday?
No, but some fine chap uploaded the segment.

STEPHEN'S ON!

Had a feeling since yesterday ended with a Gauntlet win.  Then the final segment kept the retired champ with the two celebrities being interviewed.

Well, after nearly 42 years (damn, I'm old), I finally get to see Stephen's return again.  So my memory was indeed a bit fuzzy (I thought his return was later in an episode, not in the first segment), but I did remember the "Pomp and Circumstance" that Uncle Jay assembled for his return.

I won't spoil anything else for those who have yet to see it, but it definitely was a keeper of an episode.

(I don't think MLK weekend was recognized yet back then)???
Not until '86, although by coincidence January 21, 1980 was the third Monday in January that year.

I appreciate that they had Stephen run the Gauntlet solo, and from his funny comments to that close victory (has anyone else picked Tom up after a Gauntlet win?) it's a gem of a segment.

Heck, I'd say it's further proof that adding celebs to the game wasn't a great idea.

To Brandon: Shall I pass out the aspirin to everyone?

To Mike: by any chance are you Whew Blooper A Day on Twitter?

Another observation: dunno if it's the audio on the YT capture, but this is pretty much the clearest I've heard the Gauntlet music.  Very little talk/audience applause in the mix, and seems like the music's volume is turned up.

And I was probably home from school due to an Teacher In-service day. That seemed to be around the time we had our first day off since Christmas/New Years vacation.

New record set: $1,410 won in the match -> 74 seconds on the Gauntlet... not surprisingly, the guy left with $26,410.

Did the contestant blitz up the right hand side of the board? or was it heavily blocked there?

Game 1, which he charged and won, he got $330 [$50 + $20 + $30 + $20 + $10 + $200]
Game 2, which he blocked and lost on, he got $500 [single block hit on Level 6]
Game 3, which he blocked and won on, he got $580 [$30 + $50 + $500]

$330 + $500 = $830 + $580 = $1,410

Imma have to go back and watch this one a wee bit more closely when I process the recording...this happened, and he STILL lost?

I should think you can count the number of times a player is credited with three Level Six dollar amounts in a single game over the run of the show on one hand, if not one finger.

Charging player had enough time for two shots at Level 6, and won on the second one.

You could see Stephanie was absolutely thrilled with the rule of the game (can't jump the question)

Something that seemed to stick out on the 5/4 episode: they had two new contestants, but the male contestant was paired with the female celebrity. Maybe I was just imagining things, but when they have two new contestants, isn't it usually men against women?

Schedule for 5/16-22 is out, and Whew! is jumping back to #134 on the 16th.

The way I see it, all good things have to come to an end at some point. That and I'm figuring they need to save something "strong" for the fall, and Whew! would seem to fit the bill. There's a little over 13 weeks left to get to the finale, plus everything between #7 and #78, so they should be able to get at least two more batches out of it before the whole series is exhausted.
