If you watch the first week of Gene on Break the Bank, he's looser and joking around more than he was in later shows. I know Kline and Friends wanted him to be more serious, but if they wanted that they should've never gotten Gene in the first place.

That show desperately needed more time in the kitchen. The front game was preposterously dull. They'd have been better off making the Prize Vault the front game: Give each couple 120 seconds--maybe they add a third couple--whichever collects the most bank cards wins and gets to try them in the lock.

Agreed. I once said in a post eons ago that it could have been a bit like You Bet Your Life - cut it up in the interviews with couples that warrant it, then play the Prize Vault. Lather, rinse, repeat, leading couple tries to Break the Bank. Whether or not the Prize Vault was America's cup of tea, at least that format would be coherent.
