Interesting GS-Related Story on AT40 this morning
« on: November 27, 2022, 02:26:48 PM »
On the rerun of AT40 from 1978 this morning, Casey related a story that The Village People's David Hodo (the construction worker) injured himself while performing a stunt on What's My Line.  Apparently his stunt was fire-eating while roller skating, and according to the story he suffered third degree burns specifically on the set of WML.

Anybody heard of this before?  Contemporary accounts mention that he did have a fire-eating act before the Village People, and mention the WML appearance, but never mention an accident.

I hear that's one of the more painful places to get burned.

That would have been something deserving of a mention in the Fates book, if it had occurred.

Not saying Casey fibbed, but someone may well have fibbed to Casey.

Did he tell that after an uptempo GD number?

Song before the story was Hot Child in the City, mid-tempo at best.

And where was the GD picture of David Hodo that he was supposed to see?

David is on social media, and a few years ago, I chatted with him about this. No third-degree burns. He was seriously injured, though, and audience members were freaking out, and the episode never aired. He said Gil Fates made it sound like it was nothing, which infuriated David.

Thank you Geno for the answer.  I was going to hit him up on social as well, but this saves him from having to tell the story again.

As a longtime fan of that Casey Kasem tape, I was pleased to learn the up-tempo number he was complaining about was "Dare Me" by the Pointer Sisters.

Here's a more complete version of the take that aired:
