There was a time when if you wanted to gamble legally you had to travel to Nevada. New Jersey approved gambling in Atlantic City around 1979. I was working for Wayne Newton at the time. I saw Sinatra perform at the first casino to open, the Resorts International; it was an old hotel that was still being re-constructed. Wayne opened the 2nd full casino outside of Nevada, Atlantic City's Boardwalk Regency.

With the recent spread of casinos to dozens of additional cities it has become an industry growing at a staggering rate. It's huge, and it's now run like other massive industries with 21st century marketing strategies. I've been learning more about it recently through my work at Harrah's.

Market research has shown that the demographics of slot players are a perfect match for fans of 60s and 70s TV, especially game shows, because they are... games! The first generation of game show based slots has been very successful. Unlike Nielsen estimates, the proof is in the machine's drop box. And unlike TV, this industry embraces the older demos that ad agencies seem to think only buy electric wheelchairs and nebulizers.

There are many more game show related slots in the 24 month pipeline. I'm told it takes about 2 years to go from deal through design and tweaking to the casino floor. Wink just returned from unveiling the new "Wink Martindale's America" slot to the industry. There are many more still in development. It's a game show fan's wet dream!

Freemantle and Sony have found a bonus stream of income for the formats they purchased. And although they are beyond financially secure, I can only assume that folks like Merrill Heatter and Bob Stewart have to be scratching their heads as nobody ever predicted this whole phenomenon. I'd add Barris to that list, but he's raking in a great pension from the CIA ;-)

...which, of course, is now Caesar's, which now owns roughly a quarter of all of the Atlantic City casinos (including Bally's and The Hilton).

That's wild, weird, wacky stuff. I did not know that. ;-)

I only remember the post-performance party we threw for Wayne, opening-up the Benihana's in the hotel at 2AM. (Wayne paid, but it sounded nicer to say "we" threw the party rather than say that Wayne threw a party for himself ;-)

Well, Randy, Benihana's isn't there any more. I don't even think half the present staff there knows who Rocky Aoki is. They did have a replacement called Hyakumi, but even that's closed down now.

I think just about any game show host who is still alive -- maybe with the exception of the Narzes from Kentucky -- can now be found on a slot machine. Eubanks is there, Lange now, the Winker, Monty, Dawson, Dick Clark -- and all the old formats. It's the psychology of the game show format, long telling us "YOU CAN BE A WINNER!", adapted perfectly in sound and motion to the people who watched the show back then. And sitting before a machine like "Family Feud" or the "Price Is Right" slots, the vicarious thrill of watching people win is replaced by the actual possibilty that "YOU CAN BE A WINNER!"

And the sitcoms from the 1960's are also rife for development with the "I Dream of Jeannie" slots and the "Addams Family" machines, with many more on the way.

The Price is right slots do not feature Barker at all.

Dick Clark probably holds the record for most slot machine appearances. He is on the following slots:

$1,000,000 Pyramid (not to be confused with "10,000 Pyramid")

That being a given, how many of the four different Price slots was Rod Roddy involved with? The promo material I've seen from IGT implies he's not on the latest one, "The Price Is Right Featuring Dice Game". I think he made it onto the third one, which has Punch-A-Bunch as the sub-game.

Roddy was involved in the Cliffhangers, Plinko, and Punch-a-bunch slot machines.

His voice was all over the place on the previous games.

It wouldn't shock me for his voice to be on the Dice Game version, probably because he might have been working on it last year.

From here on forward maybe they will get Rich to do the voices, or just leave it with no voiceovers at all.

Is the Dice Game version out yet? I hope to see them at Atlantic City for the TPIR show.

I'm still waiting for a TJW-based slot. It seems like the most obvious choice. Instead of Jack Barry, maybe get Wink or Marc Summers, since they both did those TJW computer games in the mid-90s.

Do you mean to say that there now is a 2nd generation version of Pyramid out on the casino floors?

I know that there is a slot based on the CBS 80's version of Pyramid, and depending on where you go it is either $25K Pyramid or $100K Pyramid. It's essentially the same game, but perhaps due to the state's/casino's top prize limits on a video slot it is either one of the 2 amounts.

BTW, I was disappointed this week after going up to Niagara Falls.

Stateside, the Seneca Casino had only the J!, WoF analog reel slots (@ 25 cents a pop or more) and only a few nickel TPIR Slots.

The new Fallsview Casino in Canada had only a handful of the new SotC vid slots with Joe Garagiola's mug, WoF 'Special Edition' nickle vids (first WoF slot I've seen w/ Pat Sajaks face on it), and TPiR Vid slots -- at a quarter a pop -- in addition to the WoF analog slots.

...And I Lost ALL of my $80 betting wad on them collectively!
