Ken J! Mentioned on 6/24 Letterman...
« on: June 26, 2004, 04:21:32 PM »
I dunno if anyone caught Late Show on Thursday Night 6/26.

I was starting to nod off in bed when Dave was saying how the J! judges were just giving Ken the credit for all of his answers -- including his "wrong" answers.

To prove this, Dave played clips of "answers" and then spiced in a totally different question that Ken answered to.

I forget the specific A & Q's they used for this bit, or if this has been done on other Letterman shows as a running gag, but AFAIK, Matt was not in any clips when they showed Ken signaling.

Perhaps a paid trip to the old Ed Sullivan Theater is in the near future for Ken!!!

I think it's a pretty safe bet that when the airings of Ken's run come to a close, he can expect to be invited to make the rounds of the various and sundry talk shows.

I was pretty sure I caught clips from the show with Matt on at least one night of Letterman. They'll probably turn this into a running gag as long as Ken's episodes stay on. Nice to see Matt. Wasn't aware of the exact date of his show and was out of town for my daughter's marriage that day. Any chance of a re-run closer to Fall?

Matt's J! appearance aired on Monday 6/21. If and when it's rerun, it'd be next year sometime on a weekend J! rerun(shows from the previous season) if your city carries them. SUmmer J! reruns which start on July 26th will most likely be six weeks of tourneys and/or celeb shows as usual. GSN could decide to air the 2003-04 season of J! at some point in the near future. As for Letterman, who knows if this week of shows will be rerun in the future.

Dave used a couple of clips from my show on Wednesday's program.  I don't think they did the gag at all on Friday's show, but I'm sure they'll milk it for all it's worth, the way they do all their running bits.

Jeopardy won't be rerunning Ken's amazing streak over the summer, they'll show six weeks of previous tournaments and special shows as they usually do.  Many stations carry a weekly package of Jeopardy reruns from the past season, so next season it's entirely possible that they'll replay Ken's games, though now that Ken's face is so familiar, there's something to be said for running shows from earlier in the season that the general public might not recognize as reruns.

Besides, I'm reasonably certain I can find somebody who has a copy of my show...

Wouldn't surprise me that Dave didn't do anything Friday.  If memory serves, doesn't Dave tape both his Thursday and Friday shows on Thursday (meaning he wouldn't have fresh videotape of Ken to play with)?

(checks out CBS' website for Dave's show)

EDIT: Checking out the Wahoo Gazette, which has recaps of each night's LETTERMAN show (archives go far as October 2001), Dave in fact did not do anything related to J! for Friday's episode.  Although this doesn't answer whether he taped both Thursday and Friday's episodes on Thursday.

Curiosity question - I don't watch Dave much these days, but I did catch it on Friday and saw that Know Your Current Events was on.  Did this go into retirement and come back?  I seem to remember watching for a while and thought it had disappeared.

Cheers,

Ryan :)

IIRC, "Know Your Current Events, Cuts of Meat, Akron Mayors, etc" was the traditional post-monologue skit on Thursday nights for quite a some time while the CBS Mailbag was always on Friday nights.

The mailbag has been retired, and KYCE has moved to Friday, at least on the too few times I have watched.

Mailbag is on Wednesdays now.  Friday is always some sort of audience participation, whether it's Know Your _________, Stump the Band or Audience Show and Tell.

I was gonna say, I'm never home to see Letterman on Friday nights, and I remember Stephanie "Smitty" Birkitt coming out in various and sundry costumes to help with the Mailbag. So it had to be on during the week.

Nothing is forever on the Letterman program. There wasn't even a Top Ten List one day last week.  Some running bits last longer than others.  I noticed Smitty didn't help with the Mailbag this week either.

Ah, Know Your Current Events.  He used to do that every Thursday years ago, but then it vanished for quite a while.  I think he's been doing it again since last summer, but not at any predictable intervals.

You know, Friday night, he did Know Your Local CBS Network Weathermen.  No mention of Rich Fields, though.

Maybe the best one of those things Letterman ever did was the night they played Know Your Champion Bowlers.  On the first question, he puts up this picture of...some guy with the question, "Name this champion bowler."  This being before Dave started letting the players cheat, the guy didn't know the answer; it ended up being "Mike Aulby," who neither I nor the contestant had ever heard of.  Then, for the second go-'round, they stick up a picture of Queen Elizabeth II with the exact same question.  It doesn't go over that well in text, but it was a riot watching it. :-)

Smitty hasn't helped with the Mailbag for a few weeks (I think Dave stopped the bit effective with his first week back after his driver won at Indy).  I don't know if Smitty/Monty/Stephanie was just acting uncomfortable to help add to the bits, but I always thought she looked legitimately uncomfortable on stage (one man's opinion--your mileage may vary).

Well, when I first saw the Mailbag, it was on Fridays. Then early on last season, it moved to Thursdays, and now it's on Wednesdays.

And also, Alan Kalter (famous Pyramid announcer) used to call out the letter numbers with Paul and Dave in the late 90's.

I was looking up some stuff out of curiosity and I found some interviews with her. The vibe I get is that the majority of it is an act to make Dave look good onstage, and she gives as good as she gets when the camera is off.
