Cars, cars, and yes....more cars!
« on: July 05, 2004, 09:27:43 AM »
As I'm watching 80's LMAD, a question or two came to mind...

1: Seems as though LMAD, at least during the 80's run, offered excruciatingly cheap automobiles. What was the most (or one of the most) expensive cars offered? If memory serves me correct, I seem to recall Chevrolet Camaros and Mazda MX-6's being offered towards the end of the run, but I could be wrong.

2: My brother **swears** that there was a Ferarri offered as a prize on the nighttime Price is Right. How true is this? Also, did PiR ever offer a Mercedes as a prize?

Thanks

The most expensive car that I remember offered during the first season of the run you questioned was the Mazda RX7 ($14,372).

$60K+ in 1985 dollars, a Ferrari was offered in Golden Road on Kennedy's TPIR but was not won.

Can we do something about false information being presented?  Given this posters history, it has a 99% chance of being inaccurate; besides, he wasn't even alive during the first season. (And I don't buy "memorized repeats" either).

Dude, rag on the guy all you want when he's wrong. But to bother to post and complain that he's "probably" wrong, while at the same time you COULDN'T BE BOTHERED TO DO THE LEGWORK YOURSELF to disprove him, is incredibly weenie.

Not to mention that you don't really care, you're just looking for an excuse to get the guy popped. You know it isn't going to happen with the killfile system on the horizon. Deal with it.

This Bandit statement is accurate, as a $14K+ Mazda RX7 was the highest priced car(in 1984-85 dollars) offered on that season of All New LMAD.

Actually, Camaros were given on the All New LMAD as early as late '84 I believe..
and there was that lady in a Feb/Mar 85 ep. who won a Camaro(aired Mar. 2nd on GSN)

You think the 84-85 season of All New LMAD had cheap cars? In the 85-86 season, they gave away $6100 Chevy Sprints! Makes the Chevette look like a Camaro!(not really.)

IIRC, they improved on most of the cars during the 2nd season.  Add some Chevy Cavaliers and Celebrities, as well as the Mazda 626 and (eventually) the 323 (replaced the GLC).  Did the redesigned RX7 also turn up on the 2nd season or am I mistaken?

I'm assuming that the RX-7 given away was not only the "big deal", but also an extremely loaded one, as a typical (base) RX-7 stickered for a whole lot less..

Y'know, it's too bad that Price does not offer foreign cars anymore. Some of the nicest ones would always show up during showcases or Golden Road. I specifically remember an episode with the PiR cheerleaders in the mid-80's, where the final prize was an ice blue Jaguar XJ6. Imagine seeing one of those on PiR today....

Just out of curiosity.....since I'm still wondering if a Mercedes ever popped up as a prize on PiR.....how about a BMW? I do remember them giving them away on TNPiR, especially during the showcases.....

As far as expensive cars on TPIR goes, outside of motorhomes & such, the most expensive cars these days is the Dodge Viper at around $85K.  Maybe I saw that one particular $85K Viper as part of a showcase during one of this year's MDSs.

...which both is wrong (it was on a daytime Golden Road) and has nothing to do with what was being asked.

And then add a VW Rabbit, although it was the convertible, right before it became the Cabriolet.

Must've been a Sunbird. Sunfires didn't come along 'til the new body debuted in '95. Basically though, Sunbird was a nicer way to say "Cavalier," in much the same vein as a Pontiac T1000 was a Chevette by any other name. And I've seen a few of those given away.
