I could be way off (in fact, I probably am), but I have an idea.

Could it be because the dollar amounts on the wheel are in a certain order and they don't want that messed with? Just a thought.

If you ever attend a taping, you will see the stagehands move the wheel in whatever direction they need to to get to the proper spaces to place the additional wedges on.  So it easily moves both ways.

 • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.
Also not too long ago, Pat spun the wheel backwards to retrieve a Free Spin that the contestant failed to pick up.

So yes, the wheel can go both ways.
Has there ever been an incident when a person was too short to reach the wedge/disc? Or almost fallen?

[I'll assume Bob would just pick the thing up for them.]
And of course, think about a person who got $1.00 in her bonus spin, only to have gotten the wheel around 19 spaces.  I can imagine the ugliness.
Which is, of course, the entire reason a bonus spin starts on the nickel in the first place.

Then again, I do suppose, save for the rare occasions someone has spun the wheel backwards on The Price is Right, that Bob doesn't specifically say which way they have to spin the wheel....
The show has been on for 32 years now. If a contestant tries to spin the wheel the wrong way, and claims they had never seen the show instead of just trying to be a smartass, they never should have been picked as a contestant.

Tell that to the contestant coordinator...
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

I remember one person from last season who was quite short (I believe he was disabled), and he stood on a platform.

BTW: Pat Sajak hosts WOF, not Bob Barker. :P

I remember an incident during one of the Teen Weeks where one of the contestant's fingers was scratched from the spokes on the wheel (Pat talked about it when they came back from commercial).

When did this happen, and was it the daytime or nighttime run?

 Somehow I knew you'd ask. :)

I honestly don't remember when it happened, except that it was in the '80s, and I don't remember if it was daytime or nighttime run...

Very true, but so did Bob Goen....which was who I was alluding to.
(somehow, I knew someone would assume I meant Barker).

Something like that. They actually raise or lower the platforms, based on height. Pat and Vanna demonstrated on one ep., about 10 years ago.
"They're both Norman Jewison movies, Troy, but we did think of one Jew more famous than Tevye."

Now celebrating his 22nd season on GSF!

Sorry to pull out an old post, but I did want to give an update on this discussion.

According to the contestant coordinator at WoF, players are not allowed to spin the wheel backwards because it will damage the white flipper arrows.

On a MOGSM-equivalent in the UK a few years back, they showed a WoF taping that had to be stopped for four (yes, four) hours because someone spun the wheel the wrong way and it would no longer move. Evidently the American wheel is setup differently.
