I noticed early on in the run, that you could only change the first card only on each line. How long did rule stay in effect?

Only a few months.  I'm pretty sure this rule was gone when Norma Brown won the max about 6 months after the premiere.

Yet another thing that *I* noticed, was when they froze, there was a blinking bar (red or blue, whoever was playing) to note what card they started with. Was that always there? I don't ever remember seeing it before.

This is correct. But in Norma's case, it wouldn't have mattered anyway since her base cards were always good ones and she changed nothing...except her tax bracket.

  • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.

 Huh?
I thought that when the show began, you couldn't change anything. Then, it progressed to being able to change your very first card, and only that card.  I didn't think the format described above was adapted until later in the series.

No, you could change the base card. Just the base card on each line.

EDIT: Just checked the tape from today, and indeed the contestant was given a choice of two base cards on each line.

You've still got it wrong.  Susan (if I may be so bold as to call her that) was given a choice of two base cards on the first line only.  The second and third lines--what you had was what you played.

I'm sure that's probably what you meant.

Which, as I said, should have been called "CASINO."  As in, "CArd Sharks In Name Only"
