From watching the MG 90 premiere this morning, it seems to me that the gameplay was setup, so that each show would be self-contained. Am I right in saying this?

Correct. Match Game 1990 had no straddling. And neither did Match Game 1991.

 Yes, you are.

Each show was structured like this:

A and B question, everybody plays.
:30 match-up for each contestant
A and B question, everybody plays
:45 match-up for each contestant
Super Match
Star Wheel

That was the sum total of each show.  The first three rounds didn't matter.

And if you notice on the premire....
1) The neon lights at the beginning was blinking* (1st week only)
2) Commercial break in between round 1 and not before Match-Up (1st 3 eps)
3) SuperMatch values were: $500, $250, $100* (changed later in the run)
4) The value in the middle of the wheel did not change when it hit a red dot whlie the arrow was spinning.*
5) The set was alittle darker and the blue stripes were not around the set.
and 6) the Tie-Breaking Match-Up and "WIN!" sign were different (it said WINNER).

* = like/kinda like MG 7x

This version wasn't the Rayburn version, but I think everyone here likes it a helluva better than MG '98(without a doubt!). A version like this might work today, but I think Fremantle would try the '98 fiasco again if given the chance

IMO, it looked a little better when it was all black.  That coupled with all the neon, including the design of the "Super Match" sign seems to give the set somewhat of a retro-50s feel.  Of course, the fiesta remix of the theme doesn't fit that, but oh well.  All in all, I've noticed that while Ross Shafer was no Gene Rayburn (then again, who is?), we've gained a greater respect for MG90 over the years.  After all, they've done worse...

But then again, Ross WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE GENO! (And neither was Michael Burger, either!) He had HIS OWN schick on MG '90.

The only thing I DIDN'T like about MG '90 was the way they introduced CNR. I mean, 'Match Game's own Charles Nelson Reilly.' That gives away the name of the show before the viewer knows what he or she is watching! I preferred Actor, Director, Bon-Vivant--Charles Nelson Reilly; but they only used THAT one when Brett was on.

Just my two million dollars..... (But I just HAD to get this off my chest!)

Cordially,
Tammy Warner--the 'Ann Elder of the Big Board!'

Why does that fact bother you? So they said the name of the show. Big deal.

I'm afraid I agree with Adam. I fail to see the big deal. WOF is even worse about it.

Actually, they give away the gist of the title right when the show begins (i.e. "Get Ready to Match the Stars!").

I hate to say this, but if Ross Shafer had his own "schtick" on MG90, I don't think he made that very clear.  He simply played the role of straight man, reading the questions and watching the stars give their answers.  Whereas Gene Rayburn would make his own jokes, invent his own "characters," and do more with the contestants than say "Well maybe one of our stars did write that down..."

Is it me, or does the set of "Match Game 90" look like giant 35mm Cameras ?

I thought "MG90" was okay, Ross was rather stiff as a block of wood in the early eps but eventually got more relaxed as the months moved along. I liked the cash format and "Match Up" was pretty decent, though it made the regular rounds pointless (As someone else here already pointed out)
