[quote name=\'GSFan\' date=\'Sep 30 2004, 10:28 AM\']Oops, my mistake.  According to TVTome, episode #20, Bennett Cerf's debut, should air tonight, early morning 10/1.

Actually, they aired episode #5 (12 April 1950, Elsa Maxwell MG).

Hal Block is a waste of oxygen. An unfunny dolt. And who was the announcer anyway? I didn't recognize the pipes.

Wasn't the announcer Lee Vines? I remember thinking when I heard the
name, "he didn't sound TERRIBLY bad on WML, but he was certainly NO
replacement for Jack Clark on Password." However, having heard Johnny's
WML episodes FIRST, I will admit, his voice sure lacked enthusiasm! Uggg.

Hal Block.. hmmm. My problem is with Louis Untenmeyer. He is a good
player, but I find he is SO difficult to understand and hear!!!

*Tonight* was Bennett's debut. As he was saying goodnight to John, you
could detect that "mischievous" grin in his eyes which was to become his
punster-playing-panel personality!

On Usenet, someone once described Louis Untermeyer as a "long-winded bore" whose forced departure from WML (due to the Red Scare) was no great loss for the show, but having seen him in the very early episodes of WML that still exist, I'm very impressed by him. True, Untermeyer does come across as a long-winded academic, but also as an extremely intelligent fellow with excellent deductive reasoning.

As things turned out, in TV terms, Bennett Cerf was a much better panelist - he brought his own brand of wit, charm and intelligence and came across very well to the viewers at home.

Hmm. Well now that you mention it, yes, he does seem a bit "long-winded."
However, I would never call someone a "bore." Maybe it's just me?

Gotta love Comcast. The last two nights the cable went out at midnight and stayed off until about 6am. Therefore...no WML. Does anyone else with Comcast have the same problem? And...were the last two good shows?

Thanks, Don
