GSN Honors Janet Leigh and Rodney Dangerfield

According to Guide_Angel (moderator of the GSN board), GSN will be paying tribute to Janet Leigh and Rodney Dangerfield by airing a week's worth of What's My Line episodes featuring Janet and Rodney.  The episodes will air during WML's regular slot.   Here's the rundown:

It won't be all Black and White Overnight, as I believe the Dangerfield WML shows are from the Syndicated version.

They are--from the episode numbers (number before the dash is the taping session number cumulative from the beginning of the syndicated series, number after is the show number), in order of GSN telecast, it's a Tuesday show from the last syndie season with Blyden hosting (1974), a Friday show from the third season with Bruner in the chair ('70-1) and a Thursday show from the fifth season with Blyden ('72-3).

Neat that we occasionally get the exact episode numbers of some of these shows.  For those of you playing along at home, the number before the dash for the syndicated shows is the production week (there were 264 weeks of syndicated shows) and the number after the dash is the number of the episode taped that day (out of five).  The "SC0" number appears to be a modern catalog number for the Sony archivists.

Cool...I've always wanted to see a Blyden WML ep. Seems like everytime I've caught the syndie show in the past it's been Bruner.

Interesting that they're adding color shows to the lineup for this tribute... I know this is just a one off but I wouldn't mind seeing B&WO evolve into a more general "rarity overnight."

Now, if only GSN would pass this information along to the fine folks at Tribune Media Services so something would show up on my TiVo other than "contestants play a guessing game"...or, more importantly for GSN's ratings, the TiVos of people who don't know GSN exists but might have a WishList for someone who appeared on one of the B&WO shows.  (At least that generic description no longer says "contestants play a guessing game with host Larry Blyden" regardless of who the actual host is.)

I have to partially retract my rant, since the names "Janet Leigh" and "Rodney Dangerfield" actually did show up in my TiVo listings for WML? this past week.

But I'm not sure whether GSN or TMS was responsible for the fact that the listings read, for example, "Rodney Dangerfield is the mystery guest in episode 171-4."  Great for us, buzarre and strange for average viewers.  For that matter, the Janet Leigh episodes included the original air date in the description, instead of in the part of the data that shows up on TiVo as a separate field labeled "original air date."

The Dangerfield WMLs were really cool to see.  Dangerfield's voice was so distinct that he couldn't disguise it enough in any of his appearances--Soupy nailed him on all three occasions (and relatively quickly).

Now that's making use of the library (shame that it's usually a death that forces the issue).

It was neat, but I have a small gripe. On two of the episodes, GSN missed a portion of the show. First night, they cut out the beginning part of Dangerfield's segment. Then last night, they cut out part of the who's who segment. Those gripes aside, it was good to see something different for a change.

I didn't pay that close attention, but I imagine if anything was cut, it was when it was originally edited. GSN doesn't usually cut parts out of a show. Seeing as how they had more commercial time than with the B&W shows, I don't see why they'd have to do that.

I wish GSN would just show syndie WML? instead of treading through the Daly episodes again.

Hear, hear! It's been about three decades, but I'd love to see the Larry Blyden episode featuring the real-life Maria von Trapp of "Sound of Music" fame. She wasn't a mystery guest, since she wasn't instantly recognizable, and she wore an Austrian folk costume that elicited giggles from the studio audience, but the audience cheered when they found out who she was.

What I remember most, however, is Arlene Francis asking von Trapp, "Did you fly over the ocean? Did you climb a mountain?" And Blyden shouted with laughter.

Didn't see them, because I was in deep sleep the last few nights, but generally on syndie "WML?" there were fee plug or ticket plug spots at the top of segments 2 and 3.  The time codes were programmed for automation to start the segment back up *after* the plugs, which has always been GSN policy.  (They also cut off an end of an segment that contained a contestant plug, which Bruner or Blyden generally started right as the contestant was shaking Soupy's hand at the end of either the second spot or the Mystery Guest--since Blyden was asking many Mystery Guests to stick around through the break, the contestant plug stayed when used at the end of the second spot to the end of the run.)
