[quote name=\'MSTieScott\' date=\'Nov 8 2004, 04:26 PM\']I posed this question in a recent conversation I had, and realized it would be a good one for the board:
Why did I enjoy watching the big sweep portion of "Supermarket Sweep"? By all logic, I should have found it terribly boring -- there was little to no play-along value and it was nearly the same every day (you always knew you'd see at least one person grabbing turkeys, diapers, and those gigantic wedges of cheese). But I'd often watch it... even anticipate it. I can't figure out what appeal it had, yet it had an appeal. Why? Or what? Or maybe how?, I'm not sure.

The same vicarious wish fulfillment as watching those kids on "Finders Keepers" do to that stage set what they would never have the guts to do to their own homes in real life. Al Howard had the genius to discover that there was this urge in people to want to go through supermarkets and go wild without regard to cost or size of freezer and built a whole show around it. You can't do what they do on the show, but you can watch it and get your jollies pretending you're in their place. It may not be all that intellectual, but "Supermarket Sweep" was not intended to be an intellectual show.
