There's this movie shop out near where I work that sells old videos, video games, CDs, and the like.  Their $1.99 bins are a veritable treasure trove of failed mattel cartoons of the 80s, D-grade films of the late 70s too numerous to count, and a myrad of 'special interest' videos.  I've made it a point to at least buy one of these every time I walked into the place.

Every now and then, however, I'll also come the occasional diamond-in-the-rough.  A couple of months ago, I happened apon a tape of the cartoon Gene Wood created/produced/wrote/and sung the theme song for Captain Kangaroo: The Adventures of Lariat Sam.  So, feeling like everyone here would appreciate it, I bought, encoded, and uploaded the tape to my webspace.

The Great Race for Office Space (Chapter the First)
(8.5 Megs.  WMV.  Right-click, save-as.)

Chapters 2-5 to follow.  Enjoy.

Funny stuff.  I loved hearing the late great Gene Wood singing the theme song.  How I wish the ol' Captain were still here to entertain my kids the way he did me all those years ago.

Thanks Josh!

I did NOT push Jim Peck. I just encouraged gravity.

Great stuff!

Dayton Allen, the voice of Lariat Sam and Tippytoes, as well as Deputy Dawg and Heckle and Jeckle, passed away about 2 1/2 weeks ago.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers Lariat Sam, the only other cartoon that I know of, other than Tom Terrific, to appear on "Captain Kangaroo", unless there may have been another such offering seen on CK.

If you Google around on "Terrytoons" you will find quite an interesting history.

I have a vinyl copy of Gene Wood's comedy album, which is truly, truly awful.  If there's any interest in hearing a track or two of that...then you all need to find a better hobby.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

While going through a recent Entertainment Weekly, I noticed with great sadness the passing of another kidvid performer who also had a slight connection with one game show personality. Edward Kemmer, who starred on the 1950-55 sci-fi adventure Space Patrol as Commander Buzz Corey, succumbed to a stroke four weeks ago this past Friday.

The game show connection, you wonder? One of the announcers on Space Patrol was Jack Narz, whom Gene Wood replaced as host of Beat the Clock.

Cordially,
Tammy Warner--the 'Della Barris of Big Board!'

P.S. I believe I'll get out my lone Space Patrol tape and watch it in memory.....

I wandered over to eBay and there was a copy of the Gene Wood comedy album for sale....I bought it!  It's called "What Would Have Happened If."  I'm sure it's terrible, but I couldn't resist, and it was only $9.00.

The problem with old cartoons on television is you just can't see them any more. Kids today would rather see Yu-Gi-Oh! than Yo-Gi-Bear!

Uhh, I don't think those links are correct. The one written up as Chapter 5 looked like 1.
There are three things I've learned never to discuss with people: Religion, politics, and the proper wrapping of microphone cables.
