The question is, "In a perfect world, _________ would have gone on as long as TPIR has."

My gut reaction is "Match Game," which didn't get a fair shake in the way of time slots during it's final years on CBS and probably could have had an impressive run as an afternoon "anchor" for the network line-up.

The 25/100000 Pyramid (circa 1982-1989).  Still the best TV game ever IMO.  During this period, it was presented in a well polished format with great production values.  The perfect look and feel for the perfect game.

..opening a big can of worms...

Press Your Luck!

Even though I like Joker's Wild better and they have similarities, PYL would attract a slightly wider age group (re: younger) because of the flash and dazzle and it was often a nail-biter right to the end. All main game..didn't need a bonus. Every half-hour was a roller coaster ride.

I'dsay 'Pyramid'.

Also it would be neat of 'Family Feud' could still trace its lineage to 1988 and still be comming from Studio 33 at CBS.

What if $ale of the Century had been running continuously for 21 years, like syndie Wheel?

-Would Summer Barthomolew still look good?
-Would she be rendered useless by a touch-screen board?

With all those million dollar games from the 2000 era, this actually wouldn't have been a bad idea. Better than The $1,000,000 Pyramid. :-P

"$otC2K definitely jumped the shark when they put video screens on the Fame Game! LOL!!1!" (You'll have to imagine that creatively misspelled--I'm not up to it at the moment.)

Anyway, I think this is a Round 1 Match Game question. There's lots of game shows that would've been perfectly deserving of TPIR's longevity.

J! deserves it, and in the grand scheme of things, it's not far off.  It's been on the air longer than TPIR had been (in their respective incarnations) when J! premiered.

I second the 25/100KP.

The Mole.

Well, that or PYL or Scrabble or Sale of the Century.

And on a related, yet more morbid, topic...if nature ran its course the same way it did in the "real" world, if MG was still going on, what would have happened come 1999?

You might want to ask the Australians.  That's EXACTLY how long their incarnation lasted (1980-2001).    And it even lasted that long after replacing the Shopping Round with the Winner's Board in 1989! (Although, their Winner's Board only had six prizes plus the car instead of ten including the car, and they used the Cash Jackpot [$50,000 plus $2,000 per day; the largest THEY gave away came out to $508,000!!!] until the end.) Even so, the 2001 disappearance of the show was never intended to be as permanent as it has become.

To me, Tic Tac Dough certainly would deserve TPIR's longevity reign.  The problem was when they stuck in Jim Caldwell in place of Wink Martindale in 1985-86.  Jim never really got the flow of things on that show.

I concur with The $XX,000 Pyramid and (even though I've never seen it) $ale of the Century (hey! two shows with a dollar sign in the title:)).

Although Jim certainly didn't help matters, he wasn't entirely to blame; TTD was already dead in the water by then thanks to Wheel.

As for the TPiR longevity question, I'll go with Bargain Hunters. :-)

I kind of thought about this the other day......Not so much with the host, but what I was thinking was, well, for example....TPiR has been on at 11:00 a.m. since Whew's premiere in '79.....Imagine if MG had that kind of staying power and aired at 3:30pm every day on CBS up to this day....
