Is that in 2005 dollars? Because that's the estimate I'd go with after about a minute of guesstimation--but maybe half that if we're just taking pure "totals written in ledgers".

While this is mearly an educated guess, you're about $100 million short.

As I said, it's a VERY poor guess.  A quarter-billion dollars, eh?  I thought they only recently had been giving away $10 million a year, which is why I underbid as much as I did.  And that's not even considering inflating the values of the $3,000 cars they gave away before I was born.

Way back in the early days, if I was watching "TPIR" in the living room at my parents' home and I had access to the calculator or adding machine, I would sometimes keep a running total of the prices while watching.

In 2004 I told the audiences in studio 33 that the show had given away more than $250 million. That makes it official!

Seriously, $250 million was a number I snared from a piece of CBS publicity dated 2002 or 2003, and Roger approved my use the figure for audience warm-up. There are other estimates that have placed the number in the range of $350 - $450 million.

Because he's a representative of the show when he's acting in that capacity, and to make up numbers like that out of whole cloth when speaking as a representative of the show makes everyone look bad if it turns out you're wrong. So, when in doubt, check your facts with the producer.

Nothing "needs" approval; beyond a certain level you are hired for your track record, professionalism, judgement and sense of what is appropriate. But a wise employee always checks to be sure that he understands what's needed, and that he is ready to reinforce the specific image a producer has for the show. That's certainly the case with any claims you plan to make on behalf of the network and production company.

And it's especially true for a show that has such an amazing legacy and has a producer who is so in touch with and able to communicate the specifics of the "brand" and image of his creation.

Obviously there are significant differences between the warm-up style and content a producer wants for a show like TPiR vs. something on M-TV or Comedy Central. Likewise, there are more subtle differences between shows that appear to be similarly targeted. I always want to be sure I'm enhancing and not conflicting with a producer's vision.
