For a good account of Johhny Carson's years in New Yolk in the Fifties and Sixties look up Laurence Leamer's 1990 'King of the Night' biography. Although I'm not sure who is mentioend specificaly its fun to imagine Rayburn, Cullen, Parr, Barry et al who were also working at the same & place.
Leamer also recounts how when 'Trust' became a hit videotape was making taping five shows at a time possible. Leamer has the memorable line:
"It was hell on everyone but the bottom line."
